US government trying to seize new Michael Moore film, says producer

Cannes is smacking its lips in anticipation of filmmaker and provocateur Michael Moore's latest jeremiad against the US administration, which receives its premiere at the film festival today. Sicko, a documentary tackling the state of American healthcare, focuses on the pharmaceutical giants, and particularly on health insurers. The film has already caused Moore - who won the Palme d'Or at Cannes in 2004 with Fahrenheit 911 - to clash with the American authorities. Now, according to movie mogul Harvey Weinstein, whose Weinstein Company is behind the film, the US government is attempting to impound the negative. According to Weinstein, the US Treasury's moves meant "we had to fly the movie to another country"- he would not say to where. "Let the secret service find that out - though this is the same country that thought there were weapons of mass destruction, so they'll never find it." He added that he feared that if the film were impounded, there might be attempts to cut some footage, in particular the last 20 minutes, which related to a trip to Cuba. This, said Weinstein, "would not be good." In March, Moore travelled

Unfortunately, this is most likely a publicity stunt cooked up between ‘Moore(on)’ and ‘Winestain’.

Excellent if true, but I do not think that it will be done.

Michael Moore should make a movie about losing weight.

Of course the government should keep their hands off his film, and I doubt this "story" is anything more than what he usually peddles--lies.

I’m sure somebody will be along shortly to whine about free speech or some such.

No it isn't. Treasury is run by idiots. All they have done by taking him on is raising the profile of his film exponentially. Now all they need to do is "seize" prints of the film to make Moore into a worldwide hero for free speech--and it will be seen on the internet un-cut anyway. Is there anyone with a brain in this Administration?

What a crock, and a lame attempt to raise interest.

“it’s about time we got tough with this traitor.”

Why? Unwittingly on their parts, he and Al Gore are, in the long run, a conservative’s best friends.

Their “documentaries” are so FOS that the resulting backlash and associated truthful debate only serves the conservative cause.

People are catching on to what nitwits these people really are.

Anyone who seriously believes what is in his films needs some serious shock therapy. All of his movies have been discredited and have more than likely not made a dime of profit.

Only the seriously insane and the French buy what he is peddling. I’m guessing it’s true, there is one born every minute.

Uuum I have litle use for Moore but his films are cheaply made and the last two have made a lot of money considering they are political niche products that play to the choir.

Uh-huh, and everyone involved in its production gets dragged to the camps, including Wardrobe Assistant for the Best Boy’s Key Grip.

Bowling for Columbine was the highest grossing ‘documentary’ of all time upon release. And F 9/11 replaced it. It’s not a lot of money but considering that his films are archival clips intercut with him walking around in a baseball cap it doesn’t take a lot of money to make a profit.

Even if Moore were to be liable for unauthorized travel to Cuba (journalists are exempt anyway!), why would the gummint seize the film as a punishment, as opposed to backing a pallet loader up to Moore and seizing him instead. Even Gonzales wouldn’t be that stupid.
