Lone Governor Among Dem. Candidates

LOS ANGELES, May 20, 2007 (CNS) - New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson will formally announce his candidacy for the Democratic presidential nomination Monday in downtown Los Angeles, exactly four months after first publicly saying he would run.

Richardson, 59, has called himself "the best qualified candidate." He was a New Mexico congressman from 1983-97, U.S. ambassador to the United Nations from 1997-98 and energy secretary from 1998-2001. Richardson was elected New Mexico's governor in 2002 and re-elected last November with 69 percent of the vote.

"I am running for president because I can bring together a country that is divided and partisan," Richardson said in a statement. "My background, experience and record enable me to bridge gaps, achieve political solutions, heal partisan divisions and solve problems."

Richardson said the nation has "lost our moral compass at home and abroad."

"I believe in America -- the greatest nation in the world -- but we must restore our leadership," Richardson said. "America should not be afraid. We have to be bold, patriotic and confident that we can resolve problems and bring peace by working together.

"We need hope, faith and optimism, qualities that have always represented and defined the American spirit. We need experienced and accomplished leadership now more than ever. I believe I can best provide this leadership for our nation and help move American forward."

In a Jan. 21 appearance on "This Week with George Stephanopolous", Richardson said he would run for president. He participated in the lone Democratic debate, has aired television commercials and made at least five campaign visits to the Los Angeles area since March 7.

The Pasadena-born Richardson is the first viable Latino presidential candidate. Richardson's father was American and his mother was Mexican. He grew up in Mexico City and moved to Massachusetts when he was 13 to attend prep school.

As governor, Richardson has sought to improve education, cut taxes, build a high-wage economy, expand health care access, invest in renewable energy and make New Mexico safer, according to a campaign biography.

New Mexico Republicans have criticized Richardson for New Mexico's rising crime, its Legislature's failure to pass a three strikes law, and his support of a domestic partnership bill and legalizing the use of marijuana for medical purposes.

Two days after Richardson first publicly said he would be a presidential candidate, the New Mexico Republican Party issued a statement, including a quote from the 2004 book "Ghost Wars," saying "Richardson seemed to be a student of the Jesse Jackson school of international diplomacy: He was a self promoting troubleshooter who loved to make lightning strikes behind enemy lines in search of negotiating breakthroughs, especially if they might deliver sound bite opportunities on the national network news programs."

In 1995, Richardson successfully negotiated with then-Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein to release two American aerospace workers who had been captured after wandering across to Kuwaiti border. He also negotiated the release of Americans held captive in Sudan and North Korea. Last month, Richardson co- headed a bipartisan delegation to North Korea, meeting with various officials seeking the return of remains of U.S. soldiers killed during the Korean War.

Richardson is the lone governor among the Democratic presidential candidates, which could give him an advantage in a field which also consists of four current senators, two former senators and a congressman.

The generally little-known Richardson continues to be in the single digits in the national polls, far behind the three top-tier Democrats, Sens. Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama and former North Carolina Sen. John Edwards.

Richardson was supported by 2 percent of the 489 Democrats and Democratic-leaning voters in a Gallup Poll conducted May 10-13, tying for fifth with Delaware Sen. Joseph Biden. Clinton, D-N.Y., led by 35 percent, followed by Obama, D-Ill., with 26 percent, former Vice President Al Gore, who has said he will not run, with 16 percent, and Edwards with 12 percent.

The poll's margin of error is 5 percentage points.

It was a puzzle, wondering why New Mexico's Governor Richardson would announce his run to be the Democratic Presidential Candidate in smoggy ol' L.A. until I read that he was born in Pasadena, California and then this:

"...New Mexico Republicans have criticized Richardson for New Mexico's rising crime, its Legislature's failure to pass a three strikes law, and his support of a domestic partnership bill and legalizing the use of marijuana for medical purposes..."

And this:
"...Two days after Richardson first publicly said he would be a presidential candidate, the New Mexico Republican Party issued a statement, including a quote from the 2004 book "Ghost Wars," saying "Richardson seemed to be a student of the Jesse Jackson school of international diplomacy: He was a self promoting troubleshooter who loved to make lightning strikes behind enemy lines in search of negotiating breakthroughs, especially if they might deliver sound bite opportunities on the national network news programs."

Maybe we can encourage Mayor Villaraigosa to move his self-promotion campaigning to New Mexico while Governor Richardson busies himself in his campaign.

Oh you better watch out,
You better not cry,
You better not pout,
I'm tellin' you why
Another liberal Dem is coming to town!

He robs you while you're sleeping
He taxes while awake
He takes away prosperity
With tax laws oh so vague!

Oh you better watch out,
You better not cry,
You better not pout,
I'm tellin' you why
Another liberal Dem is coming to town!

Does this fat bleep spend more than 1 day a week in New Mexico (and 99% of the time humping for that multibillion dollar boondoggle train) ? If a Republican were as AWOL as Governor as this jackass, we’d never hear the end of it from the media and the rodents.

Ya know, replace Governor Richardson's residence with Los Angeles, and change his job title and you have Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa.

Right on !

Richardson, 59, has called himself "the best qualified candidate."

Oh, really?

He was a New Mexico congressman from 1983-97,

Big deal...

U.S. ambassador to the United Nations from 1997-98

When Richardson met Monica Lewinsky at a hotel restaurant to get her a cushy U.N. job so she would leave Slick Willie alone after he was through using her.

From Accuracy In Media's Media Monitor, August 21, 1998:

According to [Washington Times reporter Bill] Sammon, there were three main areas where Richardson deceived the panel [confirming his nomination for Energy Secretary]. He had claimed that the position offered to Monica was an existing slot, though it later turned out not to have been so. There was no effort to fill the job that Monica was offered until three months later, after the scandal had broken publicly. Secondly, Richardson described the job as low-level. Monica was offered $30,000 a year. The senior-staff person, Paul Aronsohn, who later filled the slot that Richardson said was the same one offered Monica, was paid more than double what Monica was offered, plus he had high-level experience in areas such as nuclear disarmament and the UN dues controversy.

The third main area of controversy had to do with what city and section the job entailed. Richardson said the job had to be in New York, though he had transferred Aronsohn to Washington from New York several weeks before testifying to the committee. An after-the-fact memo once the scandal broke shows how standard procedure was ignored in offering this job to Monica...

For more on that, click and read Linda Tripp's warnings to Monica that she not meet Richardson in a hotel room.

and energy secretary from 1998-2001.

During his tenure, nuclear weapon secrets from Los Alamos were lost to the ChiComs, Richardson reportedly leaked the name of Wen Ho Lee to the media as the culprit, the subsequent investigation showed Lee misused classified data but cleared him of being responsible for the purloined secrets. Richardson promised on national television there were new policies to protect nuke secrets in the future. Then, after a wildfire caused the evacuation of the Los Alamos facility in 2000, another hard drive full of information turned up missing.

Richardson was elected New Mexico's governor in 2002...

(snip)

"I am running for president because I can bring together a country that is divided and partisan," Richardson said in a statement. "My background, experience and record enable me to bridge gaps, achieve political solutions, heal partisan divisions and solve problems."

In 2003, Richardson openly welcomed fugitive Democrats from the Texas state Senate, who fled Texas to avoid a quorum that, if met, would force a vote on GOP-friendly reapportionment that the Dems couldn't defeat. Yeah, Bill, that's not divided and partisan.

Hillary’s VP continues the charade... why didn’t he go for broke and declare his candidacy on the pitching mound at Kauffman Stadium in a KC Royals uniform?

I wonder why he was allowed to be part of the debates if he wasn’t a candidate ?

If you're not being noticed, you're not running yet. ;^)

As for being out of state so much, this presidential run is the best thing that's happened to NM in the last 5 years. With Richardson out of state and the legislative session over, we are enjoying a much improved air quality.

Here comes Hillary’s running mate.
The guy is a Clinton lackey - - there’s no other reason he would get into the race.

I am a New Mexican by birth. Richardson never did anything for the Eastern part of the state, either as a Congressman or a Governor.
