Israel Radio reported Tuesday that U.S. Ambassador to Israel Richard Jones has apologized for remarks on convicted spy Jonathan Pollard, and said that they did not reflect his personal views, nor those of the Bush administration.Jones called the comments "misinformed and misleading."
Jones told a university conference earlier in the day that the United States had been lenient with Pollard as it did not execute him for spying for Israel.
Pollard, a civilian intelligence analyst for the U.S. Navy, was convicted of selling military secrets to Israel while working at the Pentagon. He was arrested in 1985 and pleaded guilty at his trial. He is serving a life sentence in a U.S. federal prison.
The ambassador reiterated his view on Pollard and said, "I certainly do not personally believe that Mr. Pollard should have received capital punishment- I was appalled to learn that I had given that impression."

Just what did he say wrong?
“I was appalled to learn that I had given that impression.”
God forbid we protect ourselves. I am appalled at the very thought!!!!!!!
Everyone always portrays him as if he were an Israeli that spied for his government. If we execute everyone of those caught our own spies are subject to he same swift judgement.
Caspar Weinberger, Secertary of Defense at the time, thought Pollard should have been shot.

He was absolutely right the first time and should have stuck to it.
Correction: "I do not personally think that cats have four feet, and I certainly do not think that they have tails. My comments were misleading and misinformed."
Why do they bother? How dumb do they think we are? Don't bother -- I know the answer.
An odd statement. It is as if he had no idea what he said. Not that there was anything outrageous in what he said, but why act shocked that anyone understood what you said?
No need to apologize; he was right on target. Pollard should never be released.
As long as Pollard is alive his release is possible. That’s a problem and the reason he should be executed - that and pour encourager les autres, of course.
I agree with his first comment. It was an act of mercy to not execute a foreign spy.
All spies should be executed!
