Jimmy Carter: The Worst President In American History

In this exclusive 10-part series, IBD takes a hard look at Jimmy Carter’s administration and compares it to that of George W. Bush, which Carter has called the worst ever.

Installments will cover the economy, foreign policy, human rights, dealing with dictators, fighting Communism and the Democratic leadership in general during times of war.

Next installment: Wednesday, May 23

Part One

Look Who's Talking

Leadership: So Jimmy Carter calls the Bush administration "the worst in history." This from the man who wrecked the world's greatest economy and made a nuclear Iran and North Korea possible.

Part Two

'Malaise' Maestro

Leadership: When it comes to economic performance, there's no contest: Apart from the early years of the Depression, Jimmy Carter's brief tenure as president was the worst in the 20th century.

Sound a bit like my husband. But he was just 10 when Karter came in.

Raised a Dem, pretty precocious, saw what Karter had done, then basically was a Reagan supporter (although he couldn’t vote).

Actually it was the result of LBJ’s trying to fight a war and build the monolithic ‘mommy state’ referred to as the ‘Great Society’.

That said, ‘confidence’ plays a huge role in our economy, and Carter’s policies and actions, and more importantly his words undermined that confidence DAILY for 48 months.

Under his ‘leadership’ we were the definition of ‘weak’ across the board, every topic you care to mention. And that translated into a media being required to come up with new terms to describe incompetence, like ‘stagflation’.

While you are correct about how long it takes for economic conditions to change, Carter’s policies obviously made it difficult, via the over regulation, lack of confidence, and overall ineptitude.

He’s simply the worst President post WWII, by any means you care to measure such things.

And now, he’s the worst Ex President in history. Quite an acheivement....

I vividly remember Carter’s “malaise” speech, blaming America for not supporting his incompetence. (and not because, an hour before, I almost couldn’t get a little sailboat to turn around, with storm approaching across the lake...)

Sounds as if you’re only reading the head article, and not the “parts”.

Anyway, I agree it’s hard to blame 1 man - or give 1 man all the accolades. But that’s what happens when it seems humans have some innate NEED to think monarchically. They seem to need to look to 1 person, and not a whole complicated set of other humans and other more esoteric things.

But, I don’t think 1 can deny that Karter was generally a disaster, just by what he said and did.

The 1976 election was my first, but I commented to my father the year before, when I saw the blurb in the paper about the Governor of Georgia announcing his candidacy, who's going to vote for him?

Little did I know. And, if you talk to people who voted for him (once), a lot will say "well, there was that Ford pardon of Nixon, and how did we know that Carter was that incompetent?"

He was the bringer of ‘Misery’ from 1977 to 1981. I was 26-30 years old stationed overseas for thru 1979, stateside the balance. He was foolish the and is still foolish now. Incompetent is a mild description.

It was a 4600 Manitowoc dragline. Red with a white 140 foot boom and an extra 8 yard Page bucket. This baby would really move your mortgage.

Yep. You’d be hard pressed to find a vet from that thankfully short ‘era’ that likes Carter.

During Carter’s admin, I was stationed at USCG Headquarters in Washington, then in the DOT building. We were ordered not to wear civvies to work because Carter didn’t like the sight of uniforms in the nation’s capital.

That is, we were ordered to wear civvies, i.e., NOT to wear uniforms.

Not surprising. Democrats hate the military, and think those of us that served voluntarily are just ‘dead enders’.

21 1/2 percent interest. That’s what we paid to finance a piece of mining equipment in 1979.

I can remember friends taking mortgages at 14% interest. Our current mortgage is under 5%.

My son’s piggy bank had $100 in change and bills. Our bank wouldn’t write a CD for anything less than $500 but our S&L would do $100 for one year at 20 percent. UN believable.

I think one of the best testaments to Carter’s ability comes from when the newly inaugurated Clinton administration needed someone to deal with North Korea. Carter was basically jumping up and down screaming “pick me!” The Clintons chose former President Nixon instead.
