Iowahawk: Midwest Lutherans Largely Reject Violence
Iowahawk | 05/23/07 | David Burge

Chicago - By an almost two-to-one margin, Midwest Lutherans voiced solid opposition to decapitation, suicide bombing, and chemical warfare in a new comprehensive survey of their social attitudes.

The Pew Research survey, conducted May 13-19, queried nearly 2,500 randomly selected Lutherans at flea markets and convenience stores across the Midwest. Interviews were conducted in High Plains Twang, Great Lakes Nasal and Flat Ohio Valley Bland.

“If there is one headline here, it’s how remarkably moderate the Lutheran community is,” said Pew director Andrew Kohut of the survey, which was co-sponsored by the Council on American-Yooper Relations. “It really paints a picture of a dynamic culture in or somewhere near the American mainstream.”

Being Lutheran myself, I take a lot of heat wanting green Jello classified as a WMD.

Great stuff.

Gotta watch out for those Lutherans. Never know if it’s chicken or ham for Sunday brunch after church. They ARE hard to figure.

Yes, but why is this alleged moderate majority of Lutherans silent when it comes to condemning the violent acts of their less inhibited co-religionists?

Just finished Mark Steyn’s excellent book “America Alone” in which he quoted with dismay the stat that showed 12% of young Muslims in the UK were okay with suicide bombing. Wonder what he is thinking now that the new Pew poll reports 25% of young Muslims in the US condone suicide bombing when it is “necessary.” This translates into about 137,000 future jihadis among us. And the Left is worried about Dick Cheney and global warming...

Kohut noted that fewer than 6% of respondents physically attacked field interviewers during the survey.

Well, there ya go! That's good news, isn't it?

The approval of violence rose slightly among younger Lutherans and when the hypothetical violence was targeted against Presbyterians . . . "running over Presbyterians with my Ski-Doo" (23%).

Ahem. And what do you folks have against Presbyterians?

Lutherans are not one single group.

Lutheran Church Missouri Synod is conservative

the smaller Wisconsin Synod is also conservative

The Evangelical Lutheran Synod is moderate to liberal.

Ya. I heard Lars Gunderson’s wife is knitting some doilys for the head-choppin’ stump. Doncha know. So I says “What about all the blood there, Lars?”. And he says “Oh well we just move ‘em before we chop and then hose-off the stump before we put ‘em back. That’s all.” So there’s that.

That’s great to hear (I’m LCMS, myself) - there is just no denying the regional component of some denominations.

For instance, PCUSA Presbyterians tend to have more of a NE/New England polity influence from the blueblood Scots who settled there prior to the Revolution.

Do you know you can’t outrun a fast moving Ski-Doo? I think many Presbyterians think they can if there’s a Lutheran in command of said vehicle, which they loudly announce by saying, “You can’t run me over with that thing.” There are some things in this world that don’t operate democratically & Ski-Doo’s are one of ‘em.
