Iowahawk: Equal Time Debate: Whither “The View”?
Iowahawk | 05/24/2007 | David Burge

As a member of the Society of Ethical Blogging, it is important to me that this site maintain a scrupulous standard of balance and fairness. That’s why from time to time I will open this forum to dissenting opinions to foster a free-wheeling and frank debate on the important issues of the day. My guest opponent today is veteran blogger Jim Treacher, whose opinions appear at The Daily Gut, JimTreacher.com, and Blowing Smoke. Please welcome Jim as we consider the Equal Time question: “would a hypothetical chained drowning episode make The View watchable?”

The Iowahawk View

Jim, in a recent post at the Daily Gut, you said that “I want to see an episode of [The View] where everyone is chained to the floor, audience included, and over the course of the hour the studio is slowly filled to the top with water. In particular, I want to watch the last 5 minutes.” While I can’t speak to your personal entertainment choices, I think you are grossly underestimating what it would take to make The View watchable to the average sentient human being. And frankly it would take a lot more than a hypothetical slow motion drowning special to put lipstick on this pig. This is not to say the progam is completely irredeemable; for instance, I like the idea of replacing the current panelists with attractive, non-screaming strippers. In place of 9-11 conspiracy theories, this improved View might think about running Heckle and Jeckle cartoons, and instead of a live audience, how about car wreck videos? Perhaps it could be renamed The Hot Naked Cartoon Chicks and Bitchin’ Car Wrecks View. After a few weeks to forget that this show used to be The View, I can imagine tuning in.

The Today Show: Matt, Meredith, and the gang deliver the news, health & beauty tips, and just plain fun you need to start your morning off right, while dodging unseen snipers.

LOL!

American women, on the whole, are more embarrassing with every passing year.

There is something to what you say. Would American men admit that they really want a kindler, gentler, meeker female than those depicted in the American media?

And if they wouldn't admit it, would that be evidence of lobotomy or castration?

LOL, who cares about kinder/gentler/meeker, I’ll just take a little spot of logic and reason at this point.

If we all stop talking about these morons, will they just go away?

Logical and kind aren’t mutually exclusive in today’s America are they?

Maybe it’s necessary to slap the bejeebers out of someone before they start talking sense...

But...would that be a kindness or an unkindness???

Quite true.

Reminds me of that scene out of “Airplane”, when the passengers were lining up to slap the bejeebers out of a hysterical woman, lol.

Remember that?

I would say it WAS an act of kindness, to the people around her, and herself!

The Hot Na-ked Cartoon Chicks and Bitchin’ Car Wrecks View.

Okay, this I could watch -- with or without Heckle and Jeckyl.

Truly an epic debate, destined to go down in the annals alongside Lincoln/Douglas.

I think we can all agree, however, that rendering down O'Donnell's blubber into a usable fuel source might alleviate some of our dependence on foreign oil, though it's probably not a good idea to think about where your gasoline came from while driving...

And what about the chains? Who will pay for them and the padlocks? Who will be responsible for strapping them on the various panelists and audience members?

Me! Me!! Pick me!!!

Well, c'mon! Heckle & Jeckyl were classic television. I'd pass up one car crash for one cartoon, as long as nothing naked was cut to make room.

‘Hawk, Treacher has the germ of an idea there. One glaring omission, though: What about the home audience?

Oh, I suppose I could get on board with your plan if it included electric eels or a climactic shark release into the submerged studio; few of us can resist a bloody feeding frenzy, plus it would provide a potential promotional tie-in with the Discovery Channel.

And after the sharks die from heart attacks after stuffing themselves with all that fat? Where's your Discovery Channel tie-in then, after PETA starts bitching about cruelty to sharks?

No kidding -- the behavior displayed on this program (and this particular incident is not the first or only time, just the latest) is in part why I never enjoyed working in the all-gal departments on the job. About as unprofessional as it could get, though no real surprise, considering the way O'Donnell treated Tom Selleck a few years back when he was a guest on her show.

In case anyone thinks I offer insult, I should probably indicate that I am a woman.
