British police could be given controversial powers to stop and question anyone in the UK under new anti-terror laws, it emerged today.

Civil liberties campaigners are worried the powers will be used disproportionally against ethnic minorities The measure - so far used only in Northern Ireland - is part of a package of reforms being prepared by John Reid, the Home Secretary, as he prepares to step down next month. --SNIP--The new powers - which would have no "reasonable suspicion" criteria - would help reduce the use of unpopular stop and search powers, according to Tony McNulty, the counter-terrorism minister

Well, so much for keeping one's head out of the radar screen and not promoting reasonable search.

At least an individual has the right to defend himself in Great Britain anyway./s

"Civil liberties campaigners are worried the powers will be used disproportionally against ethnic minorities"

Ah, the usual tripe from leftist propagandists..... let's see, since the TERRORISTS in Britain (post-IRA) are overwhelmingly comprised of "ethnic minorities" aka Paki jihadists, it would make sense to rational people that a disproportionate number of those stopped will fit such a profile..... OOPS, I almost forgot, security "profiles" are one of those rational methods that the PC left has declared off limits, so the Brits had better make sure they strip-search the proper proportion of 85 year old great-grandmothers.

How come the imams who exhort their flocks to kill dhimmis aren't called "controversial?"

This is the sort of thing my tagline is about. Ds and moonbats today, Rs when Hillary! gets in power. Be careful what you wish for.

Incidentally, sending JDAMs to terrorist “safehouses” is NOT what my tagline is about.

Here’s a country that lost gun rights less than 20 years ago, and in a few short years they have lost double jeopardy, trial by jury, and just now, protection from unreasonable search and seizure. They’re really sliding now.

Actually, pretty much all that was lost in the last decade under the Freepers favourite, Tony Blair and his Labour party. Watch your democrat majorities closely. . . .

Oh, for a moment I thought our Supreme Court had decided there was another part of the Bill of Rights we didn’t need any more.

Great tagline!

The principle of reciprocity cannot be dodged or repealed--it is a law of nature. It means that, de facto, you have only those rights you reciprocally respect for others, regardless of what any laws or Constitutions may say.

The law is a two-edged sword. Be careful what laws you enact--you will have to live by them.

If they're middle-eastern looking, then more power to them. Not all muslims are terrorists, but....

Thanks. BTW the tagline is condensed from Thomas Paine, I can’t take credit. I merely edited it a bit to make it fit in the tagline space.

Why didn’t they just let the Nazis take over back in 1940? They would have the same draconian government they have now, soon they will start gassing the jews in order to appease the muzzies.

I perceive a trend.

Presumption of innocence.

Probable cause.

Reasonable suspicion.

Presumption of guilt.

No-knock warrants.

Shoot first, question later.

Exactly. Of course the “ethnic minorities” are the ones who need to be questioned. They’re not going to get any secrets from Granny.

Thank you for pointing that out to those on this thread who seem to think this is just a hunky-dory decision.

These “civil liberties campaigners” are no doubt the same people who support the ultimate destroyer of “civil liberties” - - socialism.

Wanna bet the same people who campaigned for "gun control" are the same people now griping about a loss of "civil liberties"?
