Some people just don't like Mexicans or anyone else from south of the border. They think Latinos are freeloaders and welfare cheats who are too lazy to learn English. They think Latinos have too many babies, and that Latino kids will dumb down our schools. They think Latinos are dirty, diseased, indolent and more prone to criminal behavior. They think Latinos are just too different from us ever to become real Americans.
What is said today of the Mexicans, Guatemalans, Salvadorans and others was once said of Germans, Swedes, the Irish, Italians, Poles, Jews and others. The only difference is that in the past, the xenophobes could speak freely, unconstrained by a veneer of political correctness. Today, they speak more cautiously, so they talk about the rule of law, national security, amnesty, whatever else they think might make their arguments less racially charged.
Where once the xenophobes could advocate forced sterilization and eugenics coupled with virtually shutting off legal immigration from "undesirable" countries, now they must be content with building walls, putting troops on the border, rounding up illegal aliens on the job and deporting them, passing local ordinances to signal their distaste for immigrants' multi-family living arrangements, and doing whatever else they can to drive these people back where they came from.
There is no chance this small group of xenophobes will succeed. The victories of their predecessors have been short-lived and so obviously wrong-headed we've always finally abandoned them, from modifying and then repealing the Asian exclusion acts to scrapping the nationalities quotas. But we need to quit pretending that the "No Amnesty" crowd is anything other than what it is: a tiny group of angry, frightened and prejudiced loudmouths backed by political opportunists who exploit them.

I do agree it's time to prefer degreed smart Asians and Europeans over burrito-vending landscapers for pragmatic economic reasons within the the threshold of legal immigration, but the disposition of these illegal ones should be equated with the removal of garbage.
I’m not disagreeing. Political will is what makes possible what can be done. What should be done, ie, massive deportation, is not politcally (or practical, IMO) possible. Hence, it cannot be done.
Are you talking about the oil already in production? It seems America has quite a few Billion more barrels than Mexico, plus fields that are being investigated.
Yes but the Mexicans serving in the US military are LEGALLY here, they are REAL immigrants, Registered Aliens, not illegal aliens...
When I entered the military the time period was three years till to qualify for naturalization...
Dont mix apples and oranges on this subject...
In Post #106 I said...”The immigrants who came here during the Civil war were conscripted right off the boats..does she want that to happen now? or is she content with the illegal aliens not fighting in Iraq for their country?”
I never mentioned the Registered Aliens who happen to be from Mexico...
It’s nice of you to jump to the defense of us REAL immigrants but not necessary..We are mad enough to take on, alone, our thousands and tens of thousands...
I don’t care if she is first generation, I think the crux issue, and motivator in this dispute is money.
Nevertheless I apologize for any impertinence on my part.
Yes. We have been marginalized, and the only thing that makes the honest taxpayer relevant is the money harvested from it.
Ms. Chavez proved that she has a small problem grasping the English language. She doesn’t know what “illegal” means.
I hope she gets a lot of fan mail from folks who waited, sometimes years, to be able to come here legally.
Act like a Democrat, expect to be treated like a Democrat: dogmeat.
Hey, if it's Fear and Loathing you want...
Well, now you know! :) I miss it every day. I had a great career in the Army and if I weren’t getting to be such an Old Broad, I’d join up again in a heartbeat.
Frankly I don't care where they come from or what language they speak. If they came here without following our immigration laws, pay no taxes, and use public services while at the same time refusing to do anything to fit into our culture while waving their home nation's flag in our faces, then yes, I have a problem with that.
Right on all counts and I could not agree with you more.
As requested, here’s a live link. Make sure you have caller ID on when you call your representative.
It’s probably not a good idea to mention “amnesty” — because you might be discounted. (Our representatives do not define amnesty the wame way you do.)
Find an illegal crossing the border...ARREST THEM!!!
Throw ‘em in a prison where they can be put to work rebuilding our infrastructure... You know doing the jobs that most Americans would kill for but apparently don't want to do. (Unions are gonna screw the rest of us out of getting those contracts anyway) After 10 years...throw ‘em back over the wall.
Being the resilient, hardworking, downtrodden, criminals that they are, they will be back with more certainty than a bad Schwarzenegger flick.
ARREST THEM AGAIN... I know...I’m not very imaginative but try and work with me here.
This time their prison sentence is 30 years. But here’s the silver lining for you Neo-Conservatives desperately trying to win Democrat approval like you are are an NEC in a Macintosh commercial...Anybody who has spent 30 years building our country at the expense of their freedom deserves to become a citizen!!
A man running for Congress in Long Beach believes just that!!
Why should the US Government be "fair" to non-US citizens? The US Government has no business being fair to anybody but it's own citizens. If one penny of US taxpayer money is going to support non-citizens, that is one penny stolen. If one public policy is biased to favor the non-citizen over the citizen, that policy is wrong on it's face.
The US Government is constituted by US citizens. It should have no other concerns.
Now, if somebody wants to make the argument that instant legalization of 20 Million law-breakers will somehow benefit the US Citizenry, I guess they are welcome to make it, but I don't think it will be very convincing. Unless they are going to make such an argument, I don't want to hear any blathering about "fairness".
Looks like she's transforming back...
