Things to Like in the Immigration Bill - What conservatives are missing.
The Weekly Standard ^ | June 1st, 2007 | Fred Barnes

Posted on 06/02/2007 10:48:26 AM PDT by JohnLocke23

Conservatives are sometimes blind to what's in their own best interest. This is especially true on immigration, all the more so on the narrower matter of the bipartisan immigration reform bill now before the Senate. The bill gives conservatives a large chunk of what they've wanted for years, plus some things they don't want. The balance is heavily in their favor, though, and they're crazy to oppose this once-in-a-lifetime chance to stop illegal immigration and enact sensible policies for legal immigration.

At the top of the list of what conservatives can get is significantly beefed-up security along America's southern border. And that's just what's in the initial bill negotiated by Republican senator Jon Kyl and Democratic senator Ted Kennedy. Without blowing up the Kyl-Kennedy compromise, border enforcement can be further strengthened through amendments. Indeed, it was strengthened, in the first week of debate in May, with an amendment by Republican senator Judd Gregg that requires "demonstrated" operational control of the entire border with Mexico.

Then there's the "trigger," a brainstorm of Republican senator Johnny Isakson. It delays further reform--including issuance of Z visas allowing the estimated 12 million illegals in the United States to stay indefinitely--until all the steps to tighten border security have been taken.

Fred also thought Harriet Miers was a great choice and that the Dubia Port Deal was a great deal for America.

Yeah, thanks for the reminder.

Last week I mailed the RNC my card (cut in two) in an envelope that was meant for a donation. Don’t expect it’ll be noticed, though.

They fired all 65 of their telemarketers because donations are through the floor.

“...backside... stupid...”

Can’t you make your points without resorting to this kind of personal invective?

From the article: “Admittedly, Washington has a credibility problem on border security. Illegals have been sprinting across the border for decades, all but unimpeded. So it’s understandable most Americans don’t trust Washington to choke off the flow of illegals and cut it to an acceptable trickle. Here again, the bill can be improved, notably by adopting a suggestion of columnist Charles Krauthammer that success in securing the border be quantified—he suggested a 90 percent reduction in illegal immigration—before the trigger is activated.”

Barnes is the crazy one here. The way that would be quantified IF quantifying were added to the bill, would be the same way they measure this today, by counting the number of illegals detained. Less detained, less coming across. (It’s a Stupid Government Trick,)

Therefore, to accelerate the trigger, the administration would simple stop detaining illegals. Poof - trigger met.

Barnes is smoking funny cigarettes.

Any premise that we are missing the "good" parts of the bill ignores completely that if Democrats take power, they will not enforce or will ignore provisions of the bill that they don't like. There is no way in HELL that the citizens of this nation can trust anything that the politicians do or say, based on past immigration bills, to get us to believe that this will be anything different. Put it to rest Barnes, they have fooled the people so many times now that there's no room for any more lipstick on the pig.

Come on just admit it. You all just want to vent your bile and hate about not getting ONLY 100% of ONLY what you want in politics. That the real issue here

Aw, c'mon Johnnie. Americans are going to get screwed in this deal. Get your head out of your @ss and see the light of day. IF shamnesty passes, America will disintegrate into a third world cess pool.

The simple fact is you old Conservative are not at all interested in getting things done on any issue, you merely want to sit here on the side lines and mindlessly scream about everything. That why the ONLY solutions you people put up are mere slogans.

We "old" conservatives want to get things done, but we want to get them done right. Doing something wrong just to get something done, is about the most idiotic thing you've ever said.

You all scream things like "Enforce the laws" (Which hasn't worked to date) "Deport them" (How?) "Punish business that hire illegals" (again how?) etc while making utterly NO effort to actually explain how any of that would actually be done.

The reason we say "enforce the laws" is because the TRAITOR in the White House has NEVER EVEN TRIED TO ENFORCE THE LAW! THAT is why it hasn't worked.

You are wrong about not being able to "deport them." There are many ways it could happen. Arrest employers who hire them and put them in prison. IF there are NO jobs, they will go back home. Give them 30 days to return home before we turn them over to Sheriff Joe Arpao to serve time in tent cities run by him. Arrest any landlord who rents to illegals. Arrest any one who aids illegals.

Face it, the Antis aren't really interested in any solutions on this topic, they just enjoy the excuse to rant and rave in the most hyper hysteric bile filled terms at a President they have always hated. EVEN if they got exactly what they wanted on this topic , they would be right back here tomorrow screaming about something else.

We don't have to look for ANY excuse to rant and rave because we have a President who gives us plenty of reasons. Amnesty is BAD for America/Americans, and will turn America into a hell hole just like Mexico is. The violence in America has escalated and Americans are being victimized daily by illegals. They are draining our hospitals and welfare programs that were put in place to help AMERICANS, NOT MEXICANS, and it costs us to pay for them! We don't want to do that.

Frankly after 7 years, Most Conservatives are sick of this constant whining.

You are TOTALLY wrong, again! Most conservatives are intelligent enough to see the dangers that this President is leading us into. Amnesty or any form of it will destroy America. Conservatives don't want to see that happen! You are in a tiny minority of Americans who want Amnesty, and if you want to live in that environment, go live in Mexico!

I do think past my nose, btw. I agree with you that this is problematic. But I want to see what CAN be passed, not simply bitch about what I don’t want passed. Because, if we do not do something now, while we have some scintilla of power, you know we’ll be screwed down the road even faster & worse. I basically have braced myself for the inevitable changes our country will be facing and want to do the best to put the brakes on it, to cushion us, because I simply do not believe the slide can be avoided.

Call me a pessimist, but it’s not for lack of thinking the issue through. I mean, what is the alternate proposed legislation? Or is the goal merely to crush this & continue things the way they've been going until the dems get more power & put through what they want, which will be worse? Seriously.

Apparently only us "old conservatives" remember that.

That is one of the good things and one of the bad things about getting older...you can recognize mistakes when they are being made again. :)

There is no “trigger”."

If military personnel were on the border, armed and weapons ready, then I would trust those triggers. Any other trigger is no longer worth discussing.

“There are many ways it could happen. Arrest employers who hire them and put them in prison”

Here’s another way.

Cut off their free medical (which I can’t get)
Cut off Their Food Stamps (which I can’t get)
Cut off Their Welfare Benefits (which I can’t get)

and most of all STOP MAKING THEIR CHILDREN, who are born here citizens....

and they will find their way back to whence they came.

It's not a matter of wanting 100%. It's a matter of wanting the most important parts of that 100%, i.e., border security and enforcement of existing immigration laws. The bill promises these things, but based on past performance, what are the odds that this will happen?

Let Congress produce a bill that requires enforcement of existing laws and state-of-the-art border security. Let them implement these requirements. Then we can talk about amnesty--or whatever they decide to call the legalization of illegals.
