Things to Like in the Immigration Bill - What conservatives are missing.
The Weekly Standard ^ | June 1st, 2007 | Fred Barnes

Posted on 06/02/2007 10:48:26 AM PDT by JohnLocke23

Conservatives are sometimes blind to what's in their own best interest. This is especially true on immigration, all the more so on the narrower matter of the bipartisan immigration reform bill now before the Senate. The bill gives conservatives a large chunk of what they've wanted for years, plus some things they don't want. The balance is heavily in their favor, though, and they're crazy to oppose this once-in-a-lifetime chance to stop illegal immigration and enact sensible policies for legal immigration.

At the top of the list of what conservatives can get is significantly beefed-up security along America's southern border. And that's just what's in the initial bill negotiated by Republican senator Jon Kyl and Democratic senator Ted Kennedy. Without blowing up the Kyl-Kennedy compromise, border enforcement can be further strengthened through amendments. Indeed, it was strengthened, in the first week of debate in May, with an amendment by Republican senator Judd Gregg that requires "demonstrated" operational control of the entire border with Mexico.

Then there's the "trigger," a brainstorm of Republican senator Johnny Isakson. It delays further reform--including issuance of Z visas allowing the estimated 12 million illegals in the United States to stay indefinitely--until all the steps to tighten border security have been taken.

Like getting permission from the DHS to get a job?

Ah Freddy you don’t get it.

The “Conservative” media establishment in Talk Radio et al don’t want to actually DISCUSS this issue. They want to vent their bile and hate about not getting ONLY 100% of ONLY what they want. The simple fact is the old style Conservative are not at all interested in getting things done on any issue, they merely want to sit on the side lines and mindlessly scream about everything because it is no longer 1982.

“The bill gives conservatives a large chunk...”

Thanks, but I have my own large chunk and am about to retire to the bathroom to deal with it.

I have had to suspend my habit of watching Fox’s The Big Story in the evening because of this kind of crap. Juan Williams has contributed to my decision.

Secure the borders, enforce the law. It’s simple - Americans oppose this new boondoggle because the last immigration bill solved NOTHING. We have laws and we want them enforced. Till then NO immigration bill.

Hey Fred! Let;s issue all the Muzzies Z visas within 24 hours of the passage of this bill. That way they can blow up all of our airports sooner!

That’s okay, Fred, keep your talking points to yourself. Jim DeMint makes a lot more sense.

Amnesty Immediate- This Senate immigration bill is no solution to our problems.

crazy to oppose this once-in-a-lifetime chance to stop illegal immigration

What unmitigated Bravo Sierra.

Once in a life-time chance to make 20 million illegals, legal...and to allow them over the next ten years to bring in upwards of 100 million, Yea, that's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity alright.

These people are beyond the pale. They are destroying our society and all it is based upon, they are rendering our soveriegnty meaningless, and they are in your face addressing a severe illegal alien invasion issue with national security overtones by simply legalizing it and calling it good.

Sorry Mr barnes and the Weekly Standard, your dog wont hunt, and we're not buying what you have to sell. It will embolden others...and would render moot the fence in any case because it would establish a defacto means for all of those tens of millions to come here.

There is no “trigger”.

The DAY the bill is signed, 12 million illegal aliens are given full legal status.

After that, they won’t care if they get citizenship.

After all, they’ll have the ACLU.

370 miles of fencing and a few thousand more border patrol agents. Yeah, that'll stem the tide, for sure!

Fred, you are so blind that you don’t see thats it more than us ‘conservatives’.

This actually cuts across the whole spectrum of politics. Even lefties are outraged from this idea of allowing amnesty to millions upon millions of invaders.
