Conservatives are sometimes blind to what's in their own best interest. This is especially true on immigration, all the more so on the narrower matter of the bipartisan immigration reform bill now before the Senate. The bill gives conservatives a large chunk of what they've wanted for years, plus some things they don't want. The balance is heavily in their favor, though, and they're crazy to oppose this once-in-a-lifetime chance to stop illegal immigration and enact sensible policies for legal immigration.
At the top of the list of what conservatives can get is significantly beefed-up security along America's southern border. And that's just what's in the initial bill negotiated by Republican senator Jon Kyl and Democratic senator Ted Kennedy. Without blowing up the Kyl-Kennedy compromise, border enforcement can be further strengthened through amendments. Indeed, it was strengthened, in the first week of debate in May, with an amendment by Republican senator Judd Gregg that requires "demonstrated" operational control of the entire border with Mexico.
Then there's the "trigger," a brainstorm of Republican senator Johnny Isakson. It delays further reform--including issuance of Z visas allowing the estimated 12 million illegals in the United States to stay indefinitely--until all the steps to tighten border security have been taken.

John Kyl is very conservative for a Senator. His ACU voting record is conservative, and so is he. But Arizona borders Mexico and Hispanics are about 25% of the population (2000 census). Congressman J.D. Hayworth was all for border control. I have his book “Whatever it Takes.” He was defeated in 1996. So you can imagine these issues are sensitive in Arizona. Senator McCain is a complete sellout IMO. John Kyl is trying to do the right thing IMO and I’m willing to cut him some extra slack.
President Bush is the real disappointment here. I gather the Bush family has some personal appreciation of Mexican culture and the Mexican people. That is simply wonderful. I think Mexicans can be just as wonderful, warmhearted and kind in Mexico as in the United States. They can apply for US citizenship just like everyone else.
Personally, I've had it with the Bush family and wouldn't vote for one if he were running for dog catcher. The same applies for the Kennedys. And Arnold will never get my vote either. There is talent out there. Mike Pence would make a fine President.
It has been interesting watching many folks jump on the close the border bandwagon when months or a year ago they didn’t know border from butter.
Duncan Hunter has ben speaking and working on this issue for years. He authored the border fence bill to continue the San Diego fence on to TX.
Hunter went to the White House the other week and asked why it is not being built as voted on. Bush said he didn’t know it wasn’t being built.
Supporting the people who have been on this is important.
I am tired of my tax money supporting illegals.

Hayworth got in trouble for dealings with Abramoff. I think it’s misleading to suggest that he was defeated because of being tough on border enforcement.

One of the things that's always annoyed me about a lot of liberals is that they seem to believe there's a button in the Oval Office that when the President pushes it, the economy gets better and that if the economy is bad it's because the President has failed to push that button.
I'm beginning to think that there are some conservatives who believe that next to that button is one where if the President pushes it, the border is instantly and hermetically sealed and if people slip by the border it's because the President has failed to push the button.
...so imagine my extreme disappointment of him....as well as Bush...
..he's been demonizing the 'conservative right' lately too...

Bush has made NO effort to secure our borders, instead he’s been planning a welcome party with free passes to all those illegals. Big difference.

In a literal sense, you know this isn't true. Even you meant it figuratively, Bush has engaged in some efforts to make the border more secure - they just haven't worked well and it's not clear to me that short of complete militarization of our society that much of anything is going to make a dent in illegal border crossings.
LOL. Yes I know. Cutting crime in half, cutting taxes, and privatizing ownership of government property are ultra-liberal causes.
Rudy is not a social conservative. It is entirely fair to say he has some liberal attitudes. But an honest assessment does not portray him as liberal to the core.
I suspect many of the "screamers" want to kill the whole thing to keep the border open for several more years. Anyone who has any sanity left in this debate knows a fence can't be built without a compromise with the border locals. They will sabotage a fence without some kind of deal to save their local economies. Which cheap labor lobbyist bought out talk radio?
Rush is the one raising the level of debate to an irrational hysteria. Maybe he is thinking about an early retirement. I don't trust him. Actually I never did. He reminds me of the reincarnation of a snake oil salesmen.
