Can Science Fiction Beat Bin Laden?
Sunday Express (UK) ^ | June 3, 2007 | Stuart Winter

Anti-terror chiefs have turned to authors of time travel, inter-galactic warfare and out-of-this-world gadgetry in the fight against Al Qaeda.

The article gives the example of biometrics -- facial recognition as an example.

One of the author mentioned, Greg Bear, has an April 2007 novel called QUANTICO that has some FBI agents working on bioterrorism threat, including one sent to the Middle East on secret missions and another back at Quantico.

While I haven't yet read QUANTICO, I found another new similarly plotted novel riveting. It had two main CIA characters -- one an analyst at Langley and one an undercover agent in Afghanistan under a non-official cover. Title is the "Faithful Spy." It will be interesting to see how "Quantico" compares.

We just need to launch a couple of photon torpedoes into bin laden’s zip code.

Who needs time travel when Al Queda is already living in the 7th century?

Alas, “Quantico” is not one of Bear’s better novels. It ends abruptly and stupidly, IMHO. Either he just got tired/lazy or the book’s editor did a lousy job.

Can+science+fiction+beat+Bin+Laden

Correspondence produced by the DIA under FOIA shows that Zawahiri used a spy who infiltrated the UK biodefense establishment.

Apparently, based on an October 2006 WP article called “Hardball Tactics in an Era of Threats,” the FBI suspects Zawahiri may have used a different spy to infiltrate the US biodefense establishment.

Given the theory that bin Laden himself was inspired by science fiction in his strategy, it's not so far-fetched.

“Who needs time travel when Al Queda is already living in the 7th century?”

Well, I live in the 16th century, according to my wife, and I think I have something that would work.

We can find where their families live. How about we say this to them: “We will hang or burn your mother, your children and your wife or wives in their homes for your first offense. If we ever hear from you again, we will seek out and destroy all of your blood relatives.”

Unconstitutional? You bet, that’s what is called a “Bill of Attainder,” and it is specifically prohibited in the Constition. But hey, we’ve been told it’s a living document that changes with the times. A bill of attainder against non-citizens outside the US ought to be Constitutional, with a “living” document.

I do believe that terrorism would slow down, for a lot of reasons, not least of which is having extended families of would-be terrorists turning them in. This worked for the Tudors in England, and it will work now.

Indeed, we do.

I’ve argued that the WP reported that the FBI apparently suspects that it was the future-oriented DARPA that funded the technology used in the attacks (relating to a method used to concentrate biological agents).

The scientist with access to the know-how worked with Bin Laden’s sheik al-Hawali — the sheik whose detention at the time was the express subject of OBL’s 1996 fatwa declaring war on the US. He worked in the same building and had access to the same Center for Biodefense and American Type Culture Collectiono facilities as famed Russian anthrax bioweaponeer Ken Alibek and prolific Ames anthrax researcher, former USAMRIID head Charles Bailey.

Only UnConstitutional for Americans, I would support that. We need to get to their level of thinking when IN their countries. Do whatever it takes to break them and hear the wails of lament from their women.
