National Geographic: Inside the Green Berets (Reminder, on tonight)
http://channel.nationalgeographic.com/channel/green-berets/index.html ^

Posted on 06/03/2007 9:14:28 AM PDT by World_Events

The program provides a rare, up-close look at the sacrifices, challenges and deadly risks that American soldiers face on the front lines every day. The film is narrated by producer and director Steven Hoggard, who offers an intimate firsthand account of life on the base and under attack, including his own injuries from the deadly blast. The film also documents daily life for these soldiers, including the mundane passing of time inside the base; the danger-filled missions to surrounding villages; and even a historic gathering of tribal leaders seeking assistance against the Taliban who invaded their homes.

I saw a YouTube video recently. A liberal was saying that U.S. soldiers aren't that great -- they're really nothing special. I couldn't disagree more, especially with regard to these Special Forces guys.

If you want to see the view from the left, it's here:

Just a reminder to the producer, et. al.

As they used to say when pissed off because people called them called “Green Berets:”

“Sir or Ma’am:

A Green Beret is a U.S. Army authorized headcover worm by specially trained parachutist, foreign language, exotic weapons and other highly developed military skills-qualified special operations soldier.

In the U.S. Army those soldiers are proud to be collectively called “Special Forces.”

I am such a Soldier. I am not a hat.

Ballad Of The Green Beret Lyrics

Fighting soldiers from the sky,
Fearless men, Who jump and die.
Men who mean, Just what they say.
The brave men, Of the Green Beret

Silver wings upon their chest,
These are men, America’s best.
One Hundred men Will test today,
But only three, Win the Green Beret.

Trained to live off nature’s land,
Trained in combat, hand to hand.
Men who fight by night and day,
Courage pique, From the Green Beret.

Silver wings Upon their chest,
These are men, America’s best.
One hundred men will test today,
But only three win the green beret

Back at home a young wife waits,
Her Green Beret has met his fate.
he has died for those oppressed,
Leaving her his last request

Put silver wings On my son’s chest,
Make him one of America’s best.
He’ll be a man they’ll test one day.
Have him win, the Green Beret.

So what's with the NG teaser about "A mission that went terribly wrong"???

I'm pretty fed up with MSM/PC ideas about war, especially liberal's ideas about USSF, and don't much trust NG.

Until otherwise convinced, I've determined that there must be something else on TV at that hour, or maybe I'll finish that book I've been reading in three page bursts.

He only uses that term when people ask him what he did in the army and they have blank looks on their face when he says special forces.
You are right, he equates it with what they wore on their head.

Have him deliver the last line in a quiet command voice, as if delivering a properly formatted five paragraph field order.

“Ma’am, I am a Special Forces Soldier. I know and have practiced 11 ways to kill enemies of the Citizens and/or Constitution of the United States with just my thumb.....

I-AM-NOT-A-HAT.

:~)

He has plenty of practice with that ‘command’ voice. He went straight from the army to the fire dept and retired as a Captain from the fire dept here 2 years ago.
Forever my line to him has been.....what did you say? remember, I don’t work for you. ;)

So what's with the NG teaser about "A mission that went terribly wrong"???

An IED killed two of the soldiers and wounded a National Geographic cameraman and the producer. To say it "went terribly wrong" was an understatement.

It was a good show, although they spent a helluva lot of time on how the Green Berets were working with the villagers and tribal elders, and what the Taliban was doing before Americans showed up (executing lots of people in soccer stadiums, etc.). Interesting show, and positive. Did a good job of showing how independent the Special Forces have to be in regards to handling the different tribes. I was impressed with "Rob", the commander (and it helps that he graduated from the same university I did :-) ). The guy was 30 years old and making decisions that affected thousands of Afghanistans and dozens of tribes. We are turning out some great young men and women.

Thanks, lady of the house Tivo'd it without my knowing, now I'll go ahead and watch it.

As to: 'We are turning out some great young men and women.'
They've always been there but today they are a full fledged part of military strategy rather than the red haired step child that scared college students so much in the sixties and seventies.

(late with this)

"I am such a Soldier. I am not a hat."

At least three or four people asked what instrument I played when I said "Special Forces".

"Green Beret" they understood (somewhat).
