WASHINGTON - Chip Saltsman's good wishes for his friend Fred Thompson end at the White House door.
Saltsman, campaign manager to Republican presidential hopeful Mike Huckabee, said he won't bolt the former Arkansas governor's staff to join Thompson, a friend and fellow Tennessean.
Instead, Saltsman said Thompson, an actor and former Tennessee senator, would make a good running mate for Huckabee.
"Fred's a friend, from the same hometown of my mom's side of the family, and I've known him a long time," Saltsman said last week while accompanying Huckabee on a New Hampshire campaign swing. "I think he's a great guy and I welcome him to the race."
Saltsman served as chairman of the Tennessee Republican Party and was a senior adviser to Thompson's Senate colleague, former Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tenn.
While his Volunteer State ties are strong, Saltsman said he would not consider an invitation to work for Thompson.
"What I will consider is I think there is a pretty good history of an Arkansas governor and Tennessee senator hooking up for a ticket, so once we're the nominee, we'll talk about Fred Thompson," Saltsman said.
Saltsman was referring to former President Clinton and Vice President Al Gore, a Tennessee senator for eight years.
Thompson, who plays a district attorney in the popular television show "Law and Order," said he is considering entry into the 10-man race for the 2008 presidential nomination.
Already he leads Huckabee in the polls and is considered as a top-tier contender along with former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz.
Huckabee last week compared Thompson's entry to "Mighty Mouse."
"I think that there's somewhat of this created sense of what we might call the Mighty Mouse candidacy, 'Here I come to save the day,'" he said. "In the end, voters are not necessarily looking for Mighty Mouse to fly in."
Huckabee may be nice, but the GOP version of Richard Simmons will not be President.
O.K. we know you lost weight.
No way will the records show a President named “Huckabee.”
I’m not looking for a Mighty Mouse, I’m looking for a Mighty Electable True Conservative.
It ain’t Huckabee.
It just might be FT.
Say it three times, real fast. Then, try NOT to say, "That's all, folks."
WOW....
That was cold...
LOL
Hope your LOL was hysterical. < /vanity>
Yeah... it was... I like Mike... but I got issues with him too... He got tossed some softball questions and did NOT LEAD... he waffled... I can’t tell a spits worth of difference between any of them... they all look phony.
Richard Simmons..?
Please tell me how this applies to Gov. Huckabee..
See? This is proof that Thompson is a stalking horse for Huckabee. :p
Me too. After he hinted that his administration in Arkansas would pursue justice in all the corruption of the administration that preceded him, and then drew the fiftieth state (not chronological, but sociological fiftieth) back into oblivion, I forgot all about him.
Huckabee will be out of this race by the time next year’s snow melts. Chip has plenty of time to join the Thompson campaign after that along with hundreds of other campaign workers from the Hunter, Brownback, Gilmore and McCain campaigns.
Ya think?
Nor will there ever be a President Giuliani.
Huckabee is a clean-living fanatic since he lost about a hundred or so pounds (again). He’s also an anti-smoking nazi, pro-illegal immigrant (we owe it to them to treat them well, because we treated blacks so badly), tax-and-spend, clemency-to-rapist-giving RINO, who pretends to be a Baptist minister.
The only good thing I can say about him is that he’s out of power here in Arkansas.
Never happen - it would be political disaster to put two people from the south on the same ticket.
Thompson would be better off putting Hunter (west coast - blue state) on his ticket. Hunter’s a solid conservative.
Mike Huckabee is a nice guy .. but we need somebody with braun/brains to kick sand in the dems’ face. Both Thompson and Hunter are of that calibur.
Dick Cheney said of Pelosi, “I don’t question her patriotism, I question her judgment”. We need more statements like that to hit the airwaves.
K. thanks for the info~! I was leaning toward him, but you may (and God) may have pushed me toward F. Thompson! thanks,..
By the way, did I mention he lost over 100 pounds from better eating and exercise.
He lost over a hundred pounds.
That’s a lot of wait.
Did you know how he did it and you can do it?
We need to eat better and exercise more.
We need to eat better and exercise more.
We need to eat better and exercise more.
We need to eat better and exercise more.
