Just an innocent but curious question: Is your view that Ike was too liberal based on empirical experiences or on something you read? Were you an observer of the Ike presidency and the times in which it took place? Ike was a lts of things, some excellent and some not. He was exactly the president needed during that period of post-war stress, Korea and the anticommunist scare tactics. Have you read the Ambrose authorized biography of Ike and his life and presidency? I ask these questions because I can’t recall a single historian, and I read a lot of histories, who would conclude that Ike was too liberal (of course, the above excludes the faux histories of the John Birch crazies and their kin).

I would love to see a huge round-up and deportation, but....you know the ACLU, LaRaza and the Cindy Sheehan wing of the democrat party would be standing in the fields with subpoenas at the ready. And the John Edwards' would be out in their motorhomes with the papers all drawn up to file suit against any and every LEO involved.

It ain't the fifties anymore.

IMO the only way to get them to leave is crack down on the employers.

That was an integral part of Operation Wetback.

Oh, Ike solved it. I guess that’s why we don’t have a problem with it today. Well, that’s a load off my mind.

What's that mean?

Yeah, it appears Ike solved it and then the country went and elected John Kennedy as President with Lyndon Johnson as Vice President, who's mentioned in the article as one of those who fought Eisenhower's efforts.

The program ended. Are you capable of inferring a lesson from history or do you simply prefer to ignore it? Your comment is odd to say the least.

In 1954, Ike appointed retired Gen. Joseph "Jumpin' Joe" Swing, a former West Point classmate and veteran of the 101st Airborne, as the new INS commissioner.

Gotta love that guy's name: Joseph Jumpin Joe Swing!!

Sorry fellows, I posted something similar on a similar thread 2 days ago but I just can't resist:

Where have you gone, General Jumpin Joe,

Our nation turns it's lonely eyes to you.

What's that you say, Mrs. Robinson.

Jumping Joe has left and gone away,

Hey hey hey.

Hey hey hey

Sorry, didn't mean to put down Operation Wetback's success...just pointing out that using the same methods would be very hamstrung now.

Love the idea of putting them on ships and sailing them 500 miles south, so they just can’t turn around and jump the border again.

Ike had real stones as he also proved in WW II. Would that a man of his character was in the White House today.

Sgt Bono will say it on this thread. It aint gonna happen.

20 million people are not going to be deported.

If we are lucky we might stop any more from coming in and start deporting the worst offenders.

Mr. Bush is in favor of Amnesty he is in office for another two years and he certainly isnt going to order enforcement of laws we now have on the books that could get rid of these people. We couldnt even take one woman out of her self-imposed sanctuary in a church in Illinois. We placed the National Guard on the border and they were run off by a band of Mexicans dressed as their military and nothing was done.

Face the situation, The American people ,myself included, headed off this amnesty,by writing and calling and threatening. We managed to stop it this time , but it wil come up again, and then again, and then it will be slipped into other bills a piece at a time and voted on quietly sneakily, covertly.

The fact is we cannot trust those on the Hill that we elected to Represent us, They Represent companies and farmers who want cheap labor and send them monies and gifts beyond our dreams. We are being sold down the river.

WE should never stop the effort to halt this bad bill or any amendments to others that accomplish the same thing,.

Remember the man who wrote this bill murdered a woman has been involved in rape trials, drove his wife crazy and is an alcoholic,he had a 20 year marriage annulled ,bastardising his kids, has never had a real job in his lifetime and has lived off his bootlegger father’s wealth. This same man was legally elected and will be until he stops running, and many Republican Senators are lining up to kiss his can. We are fighting for America, but half of America are liberals ,Democrats, and RINO’s who are fighting against us.

I dont want to be thought of as advocating in any way passage of this bill, I say fight to the last, but be realistic here. 20 million illegals are not going to be deported.

The New York Times, highlighting one paragraph that said: "The rise in illegal border-crossing by Mexican 'wetbacks' to a current rate of more than 1,000,000 cases a year...

It really was a different world with The NYT writing stuff like this.

“Oh, Ike solved it. I guess that’s why we don’t have a problem with it today. Well, that’s a load off my mind.”

He solved it for a time. His successful approach is not something that can be done once. You have to have an ongoing effort to catch and deport illegals. If we operated today the way we did under Ike, the illegal problem would be tiny.

Yeah I am joking about it, especially now that we’ve dodged the bullet (though it’s not over yet).

And, lost on you, I was also lamenting the passing of different men in different times, when we dealt with our problems more rationally and more forcefully and more effectively.

Get a grip.

20 million people are not going to be deported.

Either they will, or several hundred Congress Critters won't be re-elected.
