Republicans antsy for a conservative standard-bearer in the presidential race have begun to rally behind Fred Thompson, propelling the former Tennessee senator to within hailing distance of the lead for the party's nomination, a new Los Angeles Times/Bloomberg Poll has found.
Former New York Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani holds first place in the survey, with support from 27% of the Republicans and independents who said they planned to vote in the party's 2008 primaries.
But Thompson, an actor who plays a prosecutor on NBC's "Law and Order," polled 21%. Indications are he will join the race within the next month.
The two other major GOP contenders, Sen. John McCain of Arizona and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, have fallen well short of the leaders and are in a battle for third place. McCain was backed by 12% of those polled, Romney by 10%. The rest of the crowded field is mired in single digits.

My 80 something folks never make it past 9 without falling asleep while watching the television. Exception, of course, if my dad's watching a ball game of some sort.
Aren’t any of you worried about Powell maybe endorsing a Democrat? McCain going Independent? Is Bloomberg going to make a run?
I just figured out I am not so hot on Giuliani, though he has the best creds on getting tough on alQ and immigration.
Die hard conservatives will be very weary of Romney's position on abortion prior to his last election.
One has to have serious reservation about someone who's positions appear only to be for political expediency.
I'm leaning Thompson but we will have to see how thing unravel.
Huh?
Can you name his “creds” on terrorism? I can see none.
As far as illegal immigration goes, he ran a sanctuary city and said illegals have a Constitutional right to welfare!
Eagle, did he or did he not clean up crime in New York City? I don’t see a whole lot of difference as a President in using his staff and army to go after the bad guys. Same with immigration.
I don’t know where you have been. What type of experience has any of the others had? I mean, really and get real, please!!!
I’m sure Fred’s Leno appearance will be posted on YouTube.
Thank goodness ~ I’ll probably fall asleep early, too!
Clinton thought terrorism was a police matter too, we know how that worked out.
There is a big difference.
Rooty didn’t go after the illegals, he sued the Federal gov to protect them and give them welfare.
If he was such a great crime fighter why did he put mobbed up Bernie Kerik in charge?
Sorry, Rooty has no credibility on anything in my opinion.
That is of course until he actually enters the race. : )
Hard to believe there are still 12% in support of Senor Juan. I thought all the rinos were in Rudi's camp.
I think I have seen one FR McCain supporter. I forget the handle, but that is it. One.
Am I mistaken?
Have you seen the FR poll for this week?
LOL!!!
Fred Thompson 42.9% 152
Duncan Hunter 33.3% 118
Ron Paul 5.9% 21
Mitt Romney 5.4% 19
Rudy Giuliani 4.2% 15
Undecided/pass 3.4% 12
Tom Tancredo 2.5% 9
Other 1.1% 4
Mike Huckabee 0.8% 3
John McCain 0.3% 1
99.8% 354
It’s been remarked once or twice conservatives disliked the field. The rather anemic signs of support for any of the candidates, including frontrunners, told that tale.
I’ve no doubt if conservatives decide Thompson is a good representative for them, he’ll win rather easily in the primaries. I don’t think that’s happened yet, I include myself in that number. I’m being cautious. I want to know more. I want to see him in action more.
But clearly he’s instintively drawing the support of some conservatives without needing persuasion, and he at least has folks like myself willing to listen. I am not willing to listen about the other three front runners.
Conservatives are THE majority in the Republican race, even if the folks in D.C. want to wish that fact away. We’ll ultimately cast the deciding vote as to who wins. Either by sitting it out, or being active participants. Thompson’s swift rise to the top is a sign of conservatives dipping their toe into the water for the first time.
There is a new FR poll up, McCrazy has ONE FReeper vote!..lol
RG did clean up crime in Manhattan, but their is a big difference between fighting crime and a war. RG supported the City of NY as a santuary city, which is just one reason why NY and other santuaries around the country contribute to the mess that is our immigration system.
