Bush, Senators to Meet on Immigration - President Making Rare Trip to Hill
Washington Post ^ | June 12, 2007 | Jonathan Weisman and Mike Abramowitz

Posted on 06/11/2007 6:02:50 PM PDT by Shermy

For the first time in five years, President Bush will attend the Senate Republicans' weekly policy lunch today as he pushes to revive his moribund overhaul of the nation's immigration laws.

But even before he set foot in the Capitol, several Republican senators issued a terse warning yesterday: Don't expect much.

In the days after the sweeping compromise on immigration collapsed on Thursday, opposition, if anything, appears to have hardened among some senators who had once been willing to consider the deal. The bill's vociferous critics have also had a long weekend to throw dirt on its grave.

....

Republicans who have been somewhat more supportive say Bush's renewed effort is not likely to change any positions.

"We're pleased to have the president up here, but it's no secret to us that he would like the bill to pass," cautioned Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.). "Most senators have pretty well made up their minds."

"We respect the president, and I will listen carefully to him," said Sen. Lamar Alexander (Tenn.). "But we all have our own minds on this subject."

The rescue mission that Bush is embarking on may well be too little, too late. Reid said yesterday that he is willing to bring the immigration bill back to the Senate floor after passage of a major energy bill, probably late next week. But he wants an agreement to limit the amendments to be considered and the time for debate, which would take unanimous consent. A single senator could thwart that demand, and Sessions suggested that opponents of the bill are not about to agree to those conditions, no matter how hard Bush pushes.

Dear Mr. President,

You obviously love your buddy Ted Kennedy more than conservatives.

So why don’t you and Teddy take the nearest Oldsmobile and drive off into the sunset together?

Bush will go to the Hill with fist-full of taxpayer's money to persuade.....er bribe.....the Senators that oppose the bill.
He'll find the weak backbones and promise them anything to sway the vote.
I'm depressed!

I called both Bob Corker and Lamar Alexaner (TN) today, thanking them for their no vote, and that I continue to oppose any form of amnesty. Lamar is the one who needs the most leaning on, he was leaning toward the bill. Corker is a NO vote.

Anyone besides me see the irony here?

What else in the last 5 years has El Presidente Jorge wanted so bad that he would do this? John Bolton? Anything?

He wouldn’t do this for anything.....EXCEPT to sell us out and legalize the Mexican invaders and invite another 50 million of the same. Un farking believable.

My house rep Ron Lewis (KY) is having someone in his office come in to New Haven tomorrow to listen to our opinions. He has already sent me a letter that politely shreds this amnesty bill in the Senate. Well, I’m going to take off tomorrow afternoon and go over to get my 2 cents in again.

Here is a thought for all of you that think we are “Bush Bashers” for the fun of it. Suppose 1/2 million of us take to the streets and behave like the illegals did recently. Do any of you think the authorities would tell the cops to let us do what we damn well please? How many of us would be arrested?

Right. A lot more than the illegals they arrested. So, what is your citizenship worth?

“”They claim we will have “status quo”—””

Status quo = another immigration bill they won’t enforce.

The only reason GW was narrowly elected in 2000, was his partnership with Cheney! That selection gave him the approval of true conservatives by proxy!

IMHO, that is why Cheney refuses to run for the presidency, because Bush encouraged him to become the 800 lb gorilla for the MSM to beat up on!

Cheney was always the true conservative in this administration, and Cheney's refusal to follow through to election, is his way of saying"Screw Bush!"

No, it’s NOT over! When President Bush has lunch with these Senators today, how is he going to put the ‘Fear’ into them, to encourage them to vote *for* this Illegal Immigration Bill? What is he going to ‘offer’?

This is what scares me.

If it walks like a lame duck, and quacks like a lame duck, it’s a lame duck.

Hey, that gives me an idea for a new tagline!
