Bush To PUSH Immigration Bill At Capitol

WASHINGTON - President Bush, wading deeper into an issue that bitterly divides his party, hopes a personal appeal can help persuade skeptical Republicans to resurrect and pass his immigration bill.

Over lunch Tuesday in the Capitol, Bush planned an effort to change enough minds among GOP senators to salvage one of his top domestic priorities. The measure, which legalizes up to 12 million unlawful immigrants and tightens border security, stalled last week in the face of broad Republican opposition.

"I think one of the things that we have to do is answer the skeptics, answer the doubters," White House press secretary Tony Snow said Tuesday.

"We not only have a good sound bill, but it's also one that a lot of conservatives, when they get a chance to look at it, will say OK," he said on NBC's "Today" show.

Scott Stanzel, another White House spokesman, said Bush "will talk about the fact that immigration reform is too important to let this opportunity pass, and this is the best opportunity that we have had in decades to reform the broken immigration system."

It's the president's latest and most overt attempt to sell Congress on the immigration overhaul, which was shaped by his views and drafted by an unlikely liberal-to-conservative coalition in close consultation with two Cabinet secretaries.

"I'll see you at the bill signing," Bush predicted Monday.

The measure exposes deep divisions among both parties, but it was Republicans who stood in its way last week when all but seven of them blocked a Democratic effort to put it on a fast track to passage.

Senate Democratic leaders have written Bush saying it is up to him to lean on Republicans to back the measure.

"It will take stronger leadership by you to ensure the opponents of the bill do not block its path forward," the letter said. "Simply put, we need many more than seven Republicans" to support the bill.

Majority Leader Harry Reid (news, bio, voting record), D-Nev., said he will bring up the measure again if Democrats can be assured of more Republican backing.

It's unclear, though, how much influence Bush has among Republicans on immigration, given that it has sparked a backlash among some of the party's core supporters, who see it as amnesty for people who sneaked into the country.

Appearing Tuesday on CBS's "The Early Show," Snow said, "I think what you're going to find is that Senate Republicans are going to put together a package of amendments and present them to Democrats and say, 'This what we want to debate.' "

"We seem to be getting some signals out of the majority leader that he'll go ahead and make that debate possible, and therefore we feel pretty confident we're going to get passage," Snow said.

Proponents of the bill gathered Monday evening to plot strategy for bringing it back. They were working to agree on a limited list of Republican-sought changes that could be considered before a final vote on the measure.

Sen. Mitch McConnell (news, bio, voting record), R-Ky., the minority leader, has said such a deal could allow the bill to go forward.

"There are a substantial number of Republican senators who believe that this bill would be an improvement over the current situation, over the status quo," McConnell said.

How much of deaf-ear can one have? I admire Bush’s personality trait of dogged determination but one has to know when your one of your “strengths” is becoming a WEAKNESS!

The new calling plan, “Call All” Including DHS

It is time to call beyond the published phone numbers. Example; 202-224-3121 is the published number for the Senate Switchboard. If you dial 202-224-2887 you get the Senate Commerce Committee answer line. 202-224-3445 end up with the Senate Building Health Unit The idea is to work through the last four digits in sequence who answers give them the message. Some of you geeks, I say that with admiration; can probably develop a list of all the combinations which will keep us busy from the calling end. Are you with me?

DHS

Citizen Line
Operator Number: 202-282-8000
Comment Line: 202-282-8495

Media Contacts
Agency Press Rooms and Contact Numbers
U.S. Citizenship & Immigration Services (USCIS): 202-272-1200
Customs & Border Protection (CBP): 202-344-1780
Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA): 202-646-4600
U.S Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE): 202-514-2648

Bush had the potential to be one of the Greatest Presidents we ever had.

He's committed himself to see to it that the Illegals are made U.S. Citizens, come hell or high water, against the will of the majority of the American people.

We need a group of Senators to pay him a "visit" Nixon style. This has gone quite far enough.

What little credibility the President HAD has gone like the morning fog as the day’s heat rises.
There is NOTHING he can say.
His most eloquent turning of phrase; his clever nuance of language cannot change my mind (Sorry. I could not resist) my mind about PRESIDENT BUSH’S AMNESTY FOR ILLEGAL ALEINS BILL.

“See you at the signing”!

This statement seems so intentionally blastic to me it defies any honor or integrity. If Bush is NOT trying to fire up his base with these words and actions he is now taking, I doubt there be one person left in the U.S. who will continue to support him!

...Oh except for illegal immigrants in the country!

You know, one question I'd love to ask..

assume that you're an agressive proponent of immigration, open borders, amnesty, quick path to citizenship..the whole enchilada...why, WHY, would you include in this bill a provision that will NOT allow convicted felons to be permanently barred from ever applying for citizenship. Whhat's the rationale, the thought process here..It seems so obvious an automatic exclusion..why give your opponents an obvious and easy target to aim at. It just boggles the mind.
