"Call to Duty -- Boots on the Ground -- Army Strong"

Since its birth on 14 June 1775—over a year before the Declaration of Independence—the United States Army has played a vital role in the growth and development of our Nation. Soldiers have fought more than 10 wars, from the American Revolution through the Cold War, the Gulf War, to the current War on Terrorism. This 232nd Birthday is a recognition of The Army's history, traditions, and service to the Nation, a Call To Duty, 232 Years of Service to Our Nation.

2007 Army Birthday Message

"Today's Soldiers symbolize the nobility of selfless service," said Sergeant Major of the Army Kenneth Preston, reflecting the Army's heritage. "Today's

Soldiers are motivated by an unwavering belief that they will be victorious on the field of battle, because we have fought this way since 1775 and always will."

Special birthday events are scheduled to begin on Saturday and run through the following week, with a cake-cutting ceremony at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Tuesday and a Twilight Tattoo, Wednesday at the Washington Monument.

The United States Army Drill Team marches on the Jefferson Memorial Plaza for Twilight Tattoo. The performance was part of the 231st Birthday celebration.

Major League Baseball will pay tribute to the men and women in uniform by hosting birthday activities during several of its games. A veteran of the war on terror will throw out the first pitch of a Florida Marlins vs. Kansas City Royals game at Dolphin Stadium in Miami, June 16. New recruits will also be inducted into the Army during a pre-game ceremony.

Similar events are scheduled for a Tampa Bay Devil Rays' home game, Wednesday, and a member of the Army Ground Forces Band will lead "Take me out to the ball game" during an Atlanta Braves game, Sunday. During 13 of the scheduled sporting events, several hundred new Soldiers will give their oath of enlistment during pre-game, on-field ceremonies at ballparks and stadiums. Birthday cake-cutting ceremonies at home plate will also take place in several ballparks.

The Army's precision parachute demonstration team, the Golden Knights, will jump, June 14 into Camden Yards, where a Soldier will throw the first pitch of an inter-league game between the Washington Nationals and the Baltimore Orioles.

Lt. Gen. John Brown III will host U.S. Army Pacific's Birthday Ball in Waikiki on Saturday. The U.S. Army Band's Strolling Strings will perform during the event to an expected crowd of nearly a 1,000 Soldiers and civilians.

Acting Secretary of the Army Pete Geren, Army Chief of Staff Gen. George Casey Jr. and Preston will participate in the annual wreath laying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery's Tomb of the Unknowns on June 14.

Thousands of Soldiers will also gather that day for a cake-cutting ceremony at the Pentagon. The cake's recipe calls for 540 eggs, 100 pounds of flour, 30 pounds of butter, 30 gallons of milk and 30 pounds of sugar. Weighing in at more than 250 pounds and standing more than eight feet high, the cake will take one week to create.

Bryce S. Dubee/Stars and Stripes June 8, 2007 Maj. Gen. Elbert N. Perkins, right, commanding general of U.S. Army Japan, and Pvt. Joshua Hardy, the youngest soldier at Camp Zama, cut the first piece of birthday cake according to tradition during the Camp Zama Army Birthday Ball on Friday night.

Department of Army-level birthday events will continue June 15 with a Birthday Run that starts at Fort Myer, Va., and culminate with the Army Birthday Ball on June 16 in Washington, D.C.

*232 Army Birthday Events*

"The U.S. Army is a brotherhood of warrior leaders dedicated to the cause of freedom. To me, celebrating the Army's Birthday is celebrating my freedom and brotherhood," said Capt. Chris Joyner, North Carolina National Guard public affairs officer.

As June 14 also marks the anniversary of the creation of the U.S. flag, the U.S. Army invites the nation to honor America's Soldiers and the American flag they proudly defend.

Army Birthday week includes the celebration of the U.S. Army's 232nd birthday and Flag Day -- both on June 14 -- at numerous sporting events across the country as a tribute to the contribution and sacrifices made by soldiers to protect the liberties symbolized by the U.S. Flag.

~~You're A Grand Old Flag~~

On June 14, 1777, the Continental Congress approved the design of a national flag.

Since 1916, when President Woodrow Wilson issued a presidential proclamation declaring June 14 Flag Day, Americans have commemorated the adoption of the Stars and Stripes by celebrating June 14 as Flag Day.

*Flag Timeline*

On June 14th, 1885, Bernard J. Cigrand
, a 19 year old teacher at Stony Hill School, placed a 10 inch, 38- star flag in a bottle on his desk then assigned essays on the flag and its significance. This observance, commemorated Congresses adoption of the Stars and Stripes as the flag of the United States on June 14, 1777. This observance was also the beginning of Cigrand’s long years of fervent and devoted effort to bring about national recognition and observance of Flag Day. The crowning achievement of his life came at age fifty when President Wilson, on June 14, 1916, issued a proclamation calling for a nation wide observance of Flag Day.

*Flag Rules & Regulations*

I am the Flag

by Ruth Apperson Rous

I am the flag of the United States of America.
I was born on June 14, 1777, in Philadelphia.
There the Continental Congress adopted my stars and stripes as the national flag.
My thirteen stripes alternating red and white, with a union of thirteen white stars in a field of blue, represented a new constellation, a new nation dedicated to the personal and religious liberty of mankind.
Today fifty stars signal from my union, one for each of the fifty sovereign states in the greatest constitutional republic the world has ever known.
My colors symbolize the patriotic ideals and spiritual qualities of the citizens of my country.
My red stripes proclaim the fearless courage and integrity of American men and boys and the self-sacrifice and devotion of American mothers and daughters.
My white stripes stand for liberty and equality for all.
My blue is the blue of heaven, loyalty, and faith.
I represent these eternal principles: liberty, justice, and humanity.
I embody American freedom: freedom of speech, religion, assembly, the press, and the sanctity of the home.
I typify that indomitable spirit of determination brought to my land by Christopher Columbus and by all my forefathers - the Pilgrims, Puritans, settlers at James town and Plymouth.
I am as old as my nation.
I am a living symbol of my nation's law: the Constitution of the United States and the Bill of Rights.
I voice Abraham Lincoln's philosophy: "A government of the people, by the people, for the people."
I stand guard over my nation's schools, the seedbed of good citizenship and true patriotism.
I am displayed in every schoolroom throughout my nation; every schoolyard has a flag pole for my display.
Daily thousands upon thousands of boys and girls pledge their allegiance to me and my country.
I have my own law—Public Law 829, "The Flag Code" - which definitely states my correct use and display for all occasions and situations.
I have my special day, Flag Day. June 14 is set aside to honor my birth.
Americans, I am the sacred emblem of your country. I symbolize your birthright, your heritage of liberty purchased with blood and sorrow.
I am your title deed of freedom, which is yours to enjoy and hold in trust for posterity.
If you fail to keep this sacred trust inviolate, if I am nullified and destroyed, you and your children will become slaves to dictators and despots.
Eternal vigilance is your price of freedom.
As you see me silhouetted against the peaceful skies of my country, remind yourself that I am the flag of your country, that I stand for what you are - no more, no less.
Guard me well, lest your freedom perish from the earth.
Dedicate your lives to those principles for which I stand: "One nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."
I was created in freedom. I made my first appearance in a battle for human liberty.
God grant that I may spend eternity in my "land of the free and the home of the brave" and that I shall ever be known as "Old Glory," the flag of the United States of America.

KCBD News Channel 11 (Lubbock, Texas), 13 June 2007

A Lubbock soldier is now a purple heart recipient. NewsChannel 11 first told you about Jason Bates last month.

The Monterey High School graduate was injured in Iraq when an improvised explosive device detonated and destroyed the humvee he was in. He's recovering at a hospital in San Antonio right now.

Newschannel 11's Nicole Pesecky sat down with Jason's uncle and brings us Jason's story of bravery and courage.

Video here.

The success of the C Canyon reclamation project can be seen in the wildlife that now abounds there. The wild flowers are a mix that was created solely for the Bisbee climate. The Indian Blanket flowers in the foreground lie in stark contrast with the unclaimed areas in the background.(Shar Porier•Herald/Review)
