Five-ounce tubes of toothpaste labeled Colgate and sold in discount stores in four states are being recalled because they may contain a poisonous chemical, according to the importer.

A Food and Drug Administration official, Doug Arbesfeld, confirmed that testing had found the chemical in a product with the Colgate label. But he said the agency is unsure if it is really Colgate or a counterfeit.

- Found during “routine” FDA testing.

- FDA unsure if it is counterfit product or the real deal.

- Made in South Africa - is printed on the box and includes Regular, Gel, Triple and Herbal versions.

Not seeing anything on the FDA website. This has been their pattern during the pet food recall.

Colgate-Palmolive is not responding to inquires.

Ripper: Have you ever heard of a thing called fluoridation. Fluoridation of water? Mandrake: Uh? Yes, I-I have heard of that, Jack, yes. Yes. Ripper: Well, do you know what it is? It might be, but actual rip-offs don’t seem to be the Dollar Store way. They are the ones who have small sizes or close outs from other stores...

I am thinking that the FDA is just giving them cover and letting it get out slowly to allow time to mount a response.

Ya, that’s the pattern. During the ongoing Pet Food Massacre the FDA did as you describe.

Looks like AP found out before Proctor and Gamble could get their Spinmeisters deployed.

We really should have information regarding what stores and lot numbers are involved.

I would bet that confirming the poroducts lot numbers against Proctor and Gambles production records would indicate if it was counterfeit product or not.

When the reports came out last week about the unheard-of brands of Chinese toothpase, I hied off to check my toothpaste. I wasn't worried at the time, because I used Coplgate, and it said, "Made in U.S.A."

Just checked again. My tubes are 6-ounce; one ingredient is "propylene glycol," not "diethylene..."

I threw out my tube of Crest toothpaste last week after I found out it was being manufactured in Mexico - but NOWHERE on the label did it indicate country of origin. I had to search the internet to find out where it was made...

It also was lacking the “inactive ingredients” list. So I chunked that sucker and made my own. Equal parts baking soda and salt (one teaspoon each) then add one-quarter teaspoon hydrogen peroxide and a couple of drops of cinnamon-flavored apple cider vinegar and voila! Foaming action tooth scrub that disinfects your mouth and really works!

Oddly enough, it was diethylene glycol in the Elixir of Sulfanilimide incident in 1937 which results in the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act of 1938, which started to give the FDA regulatory power.

There is nothing new under the sun...

OMG - They’re having the fluoride rant again on the other thread!

I didn't see anything about fluoride on the other thread. My father-in-law thinks that fluoride causes cancer, Alzheimer's disease, projectile flatulence, swimmer's ear, clubbed feet, etc. So I'm always interested in what other kooks are saying.

He's on this absurd organic and "all natural" kick. I always tell him that everything on earth is "all natural" (we're not importing stuff from another dimension). He rants on and on about chemicals and hormones and suchlike. He's really ate up with it. I think it's a bunch of nonsense.

Anyway, here's the thread I went to. Am I just missing it?

Thanks for the recipe and the link. My wife has used strawberries on occasion - nothing else, just strawberries mashed into a paste.

I've found that Ajax (the powdered bathroom cleaner) works well to whiten my teeth. Okay, I'm kidding.

What would it take to ever get the manufacturing back here once it is gone?

It is becoming obvious that goods from China, especially food products and ingredients, are very dangerous.

Would D.C. actually want to wage a trade war with China?

Do they have the guts?

CAVEAT CAVEAT CAVEAT! Do NOT swallow this mix! Do not put in your eyes! Do not smear on clothing, mash in hair, eat for dessert, or otherwise do anything with this formula! May cause distress, balding, harm, death, odors, or even the condition known as “hot-dog fingers”!

I really don’t know if any of that would happen, but hey, I’m just sayin’...

-———Okay, back to the discussion-———

I use one teaspoon of equal parts baking soda and salt, THEN add the liquids right before using it - one quarter teaspoon of hydrogen peroxide and probably 1/8 teaspoon of vinegar. If you add the liquids any earlier, you just get mush... wait til time of use, and you get foamy good action!
