Bill Carr, acting deputy undersecretary of defense for military personnel policy, expressed hope today during a telephone conference with veterans’ group representatives that a provision in the stalled immigration bill that would have allowed some undocumented aliens to join the military won’t stall as well.
The Army recruited 5,101 active-duty soldiers in May, 399 short of its 5,500-soldier goal, the Defense Department recently announced.
The Navy and Air Force, however, both met their May goals, with 2,709 and 2,451 recruits, respectively. The Marine Corps exceeded its May goal by 34 percent, signing on 2,225 new Marines.
The provision at stake is the Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors, or DREAM that offered illegal residents a way to join the military and, ultimately, become citizens, Carr explained.
"In other words, if you had come across (the border) with your parents, yet you were a minor child and have been in the U.S. school system for a number of years, then you could be eligible to enlist,” he said. "And at the end of that enlistment, then you would be eligible to become a citizen.”
Because the provision would have applied only to the "cream of the crop” of students who have demonstrated top aptitude, it would have been "very appealing” to the military, Carr said. "It would have been good for readiness,” he added.

Here it comes......
“If you don’t allow illegals in the military you want America to lose.”
You don’t support the troops if you don’t support the illegals.
Just another way to bypass what the public wants.
This guy is a political appointee by Bush, right? That means that this is orchestrated in an effort to try to build support for shamnesty.
There is a length to what I can abide. Can’t have it both ways people. I can see through this crap.
Not fair, of course, to ask them to put their life on the line for those who would sell citizenship and America, a nation the citzens are not willing to fight for.
Illegals are too short.
As long as they don't kiss-and-tell, I don't care about them either.
He became American citizen he went on fast track of citizenship when he join the Marines
You realize there are several big city police chiefs that now want to hire non-citizens as cops?
Believe it, it's for real.
Statesmen don't give a flip "what the public wants." They do what's right.
When did polls start driving FR's agenda?
Not only no but F*** NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
It’s time for me to retire.
No illegal aliens. Period. To join the military one should be a citizen, at least a high school graduate, no felony convictions, and pass a physical.
Was your friend an illegal alien when he naturalized?
Did you know that illegal alien males are required to register for the draft? Go take a look at the Selective Service System web page.
Since when did anyone on FR refer to Ted Kennedy as a 'statesman'?
Believe it, it's for real.
Yeah he was
He came to the US as a baby he wasn’t born here he went through school join Marines when he was 18 year old was on fast track to citizenship
They could pay them half the pay of a citizen cop and threaten to deport them if they were any trouble...
The chow halls would have to serve more frijoles than they do now...
What about the kid aged 8 or 9 who was brought into the country by his parents? He is now 18 and wants to join the Army to fight for the only country that he knows. Are those kids criminals as well?
