But isn’t Wyoming’s Gov a Dem?

What makes anyone think the Gov will pick a Repub to fill the slot?

Based on what I know, the best choices would be Cynthia Loomis (whom the Governor dislikes), Tom Sansonetti, and Randall Luthi. Any further information would be greatly appreciated, particularly with regards to their views on border security.

State law requires it.

I believe Wyoming law requires the Governor to choose from a list of 3 nominees from leaders of the deceased Senator’s party.

The state’s law says that the governor must ask the deceased’s party for candidates for the slot. He cannot appoint someone from another party to fill the slot.

The WY Gov has *no* choice in the matter.

“The WY Gov has *no* choice in the matter.”

Why wouldn’t he pick the weakest among the 3?

from leaders of the deceased Senator’s party

That sounds like a well reasoned idea.

labard1, that wouldn't be Rocky Mountain Lab in Nixon's nose, would it?

That’s the idea, to pick the weakest.

And the countermeasure is to give him three that are equally strong.

I see Ray Hunkins name on the list. He was the man that Freudenthal defeated in the greatest landslide win (70-30%) for a rodent for the Governorship in Wyoming history. Sadly, had Hunkins been the nominee in 2002, he would’ve beaten Freudenthal. He’s also no youngster, well into his 70s.

Colin Simpson drew some anger from Barbara Cubin when he openly declared in the past day or so that if he wasn’t chosen for Senator, he was going to challenge her for the House seat. That didn’t make him look too good, in my opinion, with that arrogant display if he doesn’t get his dad’s old job.

Barbara Cubin’s insistance on seeking reelection, knowing that she’s unpopular among voters in a heavily Republican state, doesn’t reflect well on her, either.

GOP Congresscritters are just as tone deaf as President Bush.

Sadly, Cubin will win the primary by exploiting conservative frustration on immigration reform.

I suspect he will pick -- not necessarily the least conservative of the three -- but the one among the three is the least electable.

You are almost certainly correct, but even a weak Republican (picked from a list of 3) is still better than having a Dim vote in the Senate until the next election.

Hunkins is 68. Why do you think he would have won in 2002 when he fared so poorly in 2006?

The “Barasso” (SP?) is a pro-abortion doctor from Casper.

Don’t they have to get the three names in to the governor pretty soon? They’d better hurry up their selection process.

For some reason, I thought he was born in the early ‘30s, not late ‘30s. Hunkins placed 2nd to Eli Bebout in the ‘02 GOP primary, and most considered Hunkins to not have the baggage and problems of Bebout and would’ve likely dispatched Freudenthal (who benefitted solely from Bebout’s problems, and was considered an opportunist who had switched parties to further his career).
