"Today, the counterculture's victims are dying with few children to mourn them - at least, few who are willing to speak to parents who put their own desires ahead of their children's. It is the end of a long, bad trip."

Amen.

In just a single generation, America went from The Greatest Generation to The Worst Generation.

....ran away to find Love in San Francisco, only to wind up wasted on a street whose name sounds like hate.

Reminds me of the Sly Stone song "Luv N' Haight" from the (amazing) album There's a Riot Goin' On.

It wasn`t the summer of love, it was the summer of drugs.

The hippies aren’t gone...they are faculty in many universities, in Congress and even running for President...check out pictures of Hillary Clinton in her 1960s glad rags.

The last time I met real hippies was in 1982. There were two of them, man and wife, and they were landlords who happened to be very upset about a tenant who wouldn’t pay his rent. The flower wreaths in their hair and their bill-collector tone made it seem as though Rod Serling would step around a lampost at any moment.

Interesting how those famed drug users all died of liver ailments.

"Summer of Love"

Was the successful propaganda campaign by the record industry, Hollywierd and the MSM to undermine our nation by substituting the word love for sex. It was delayed 15 years Because of "Tail-gunner Joes' and The House Unamerican Activities revelations.

"Hippie Hippie Shakedown: But where was love? "

Hmmm ... can't remember .... maybe .... nahhh, that wasn't it .... The Common?

Maybe.

Hard to tell.

Discovered acid in '67 ...

Woke up in '81

What a long, strange trip it's been

(So I've been told ... can't remember)

But where was love?

In the same token, where were the multiple, daily drive by shootings? Millions of illegal aliens, and organized gangs? Today we have Manson style brutal murders weekly, not to mention senseless mass murders of students, work place shootings etc, sky scrapers being leveled etc.

Don't know about you, but I'd take what we had in the 60s any day.

Good article! I was in SF that summer and what I saw was appalling. I remember that one poor girl was raped to death in a bathtub by druggies in the Haight; the streets were filled with middle class kids strung out on whatever, begging and prostituting themselves, and it was virtually an everyday thing to see somebody on a bad trip trying to jump off a roof.

But I beg to differ. The Greatest Generation may have been the earlier crop of those who were drafted and fought in WWII, but the really creepy theory behind all of these things - ranging from drug use to total sexual chaos - came from people who were older than the young people of the 60s - that is, members of the “Greatest Generation.”

Timothy Leary was not a teenager; neither were any of the horrible Marxist philosophers who corrupted American education. Many of them were left-wing Europeans who had come here prior to WWII, but they were received with great joy by American universities, and the younger faculty adopted all of their positions. This includes members of the “Greatest Generation” who had come home and gone through school on the GI Bill and were teaching teenagers in the late 50s and early 60s. That was where I heard most of the garbage I heard at that time: from the “Greatest Generation.”

Where was the “love?”

Love?

Think, “crotch.”

Which, is apparently where it remains, to this day.

Well, it was the “greatest generation” (an invention of the Lib Tom Brokaw) that brought us 70% top marginal tax rates, the postwar welfare state, and an overregulated economy. Otherwise, I see your point...

“Today, the counterculture’s victims are dying with few children to mourn them...”

Well, the city of Boulder is trying their best to pass on the ideas of experimenting with sex and drugs.

Supporters of the hippies' objectives argue that they and future generations benefited from the dismantling of repressive Eisenhower-era values that restricted sex to marriage.

Written by some one who obviously wasn't alive during the fifties. It would be funny if it weren't so naive.

And these miserable people actually accused their parents' generation--the generation that gave thousands of its finest young men to destroy fascism--of "fascism!" That should tell you something about these ingrates.

The Sixties generation has got to be one of the most evil generations in world history. They cursed the country that defeated Nazism while celebrating one-party totalitarian states headed by "great leaders" (like Mao and Castro) where dissent was against the law and the press was entirely controlled by the regime. These miserable Communist ratholes were embraced as the antithesis of fascism while their own country, a country where dissent has almost always been tolerated (barring a few short emergency situations), whre there is a presidential election every four years and a full congressional election every two years--a country where the government doesn't own the press (though sometimes the contrary seems a possibility!) was despised. The hippies dismissed all these "petit bourgeois" freedoms as illusions and embraced carbon copies of Hitler and Mussolini because, they claimed, they fed their people.

So I guess according to the hippies, if Hitler and Mussolini had merely "fed their people" (instead of merely making the trains run on time), they would have been "morally superior" to the United States of America!

Does this means if President Bush "feeds his people" that he can declare himself "president for life" and outlaw all dissent, and then be supported by the Stephen Spielbergs and Michael Moores???

These Sixties hippies are the scum of humanity!
