Thompson: I'm The Man For The Times
Times online ^ | June 20, 2007 | Gerard Baker

Posted on 06/20/2007 10:25:02 AM PDT by de meanr

Fred Thompson, the actor and former US senator, has given his strongest indication yet that he is preparing to launch a presidential campaign in the next few weeks.

In an exclusive interview, his first with a non-US news organization, the former lawyer and star of "Law and Order", the US detective show, told The Times that his presidential bid would be based on his belief that Americans wanted change and that he was uniquely placed to provide it.

“I think they perceive the reality and the reality is that perhaps this is the occasion where the man meets the times.”

He said he had the experience for a tough presidential campaign in an already crowded field for the Republican nomination in next year’s presidential election. “As we say where I grew up this ain’t my first rodeo. I’ve seen it up close and personal. I’ve had good friends run for president. I've campaigned for them. I’ve known a few presidents. I understand what the job is about and I wouldn’t run for it if I wasn’t willing to pay the price”.

Hunter’s the victim of poor marketing.

He’s a gem, IMO.

Adding to the one that you saw that’s 225,756 people that saw that clip. And I’m sure there are lots more.

I suggest that may be more people than saw the dems debate on CNN.

Thanks for the link. The acoustics were not conducive to understanding all his words, but very clearly could count the “uhs” on each segment ie: #1 = 44 uhs, #2 = 39 uhs, #3 shorter segment - 9 uhs, and #4, another shorter segment - 11 uhs.

So that’s, uh, all I, uh, have to say about, uh, that. :)

And I predict now that is what will happen.

That is unless the RINO members of the party try and sabotage his campaign.

Fred is saying the right things, and looks like he can win. I'm still waiting, before I decide where to send my money though.

When Thompson announces his official candidacy then begins the vetting process for me. His stand on immigration appears to be talk, enforce the law etc. I'm looking for a plan of action not rhetoric. If Thompson can provide that then I will lend my support and vote in the primary.

Actually, Paperdoll, the “uhs” in Fred’s speech are part of his style.
It makes his phrasing interesting and easy to follow.

Other than the fact that I have utterly no clue what the heck you are trying to say here, it just shows you talk about fairness but have no problem engaging in ad hominem attacks yourself.

Actually “uhs” are timeouts to think. He should know before he opens his mouth what is going to come out of it.
Nez pas?

Hunter completely blew his chance by not immediately mobilizing grassroots support. He has tried to run a traditional campaign when only an untraditional campaign could have worked

..dirt, I'll have to seriously disagree with your statement

Based upon what I have seen, DH's campaign is an attempt to function within a new paradigm--completely grassroots and information age oriented. This would be completely under the radar of the MSM and the traditional polling tools.

His favorable showings in AZ, SC and CA are showing us something is going on in a good way.

Honestly, if FDT is your guy, then he's your guy--but let's not mischaracterize DH's campaign plan.

BTW we are not that far apart on things anyway...

Well, maybe that’s the diff between a script and a conversational tone.
Fred is masterful at making his listener feel comfortable.

His audience response was very friendly, didn’t you think?

and said the US was right to try to promote democracy around the world.

gasp! How dare he! Well, I'll be awaiting another of Noonan's tirades about this concept.

i know the article is about Thompson, but to have him advocate this concept reminds me of her god drenched hypocritical elitist editorial on the subject manner.

I would like further elaboration on the needed realism he states he would inject. If part of that includes less sloganeering and more focus on the complexities of this war, that it is not as simple as stay or leave, I'd be onboard with that. this nonsense about war for oil and blah blah blah needs to be smacked down. as does the motive of those wishing us to leave not being pure. And it needs to be called out from on top, not just from the grassroots. We fought that war of words and held them off for 3-4 years but we have done as much as we can while conflicting signals from the top recite lines about not questioning anyone's patritoism...

>and the US was right to try to promote democracy around the world.<

That’s typical globalist thinking. It is meddling in what is none of our business. Our president is to be loyal to our own sacred documents, now much disparaged by the CFR. He is to be the President of these United States, not President of the world, as globalist W. has been known to do to the detriment of his own country!
