Earlier this year, on Mar. 16, Wal-Mart Stores (WMT) abandoned plans to create its own bank. The retailing giant withdrew its application for a bank charter in the face of tremendous opposition from competitors, as well as from politicians in Washington and state capitals.

Unfortunately, I am dependent on rides to town. I have no choice but to shop WalMart. I am worried about the nutritional supplements that I purchase from them :(

Instead of banks, why don’t they reinstate layaways? Much more useful to the average customer, imo.

Because layaways waste space and time. Layaways are not worth the overhead expense.

People who 'need' the layaway plan can accomplish much the same thing with a cookie jar at home. They simply have to do it PRIOR to shopping, rather than after.

If cat food is an example, the high price stuff from exclusive stores is as likely to be tainted as the store brand at Wal-Mart.

Why do you think Barney Frank is against this? Could it be that Wal-Mart will have cheaper transactional fees than Frank’s corporate financial constituents based out of New Jersey? Hmmmmm....

I use to like shopping at Walmart, however after receiving cruddy service 4 times in a row, I halted all shopping to Walmart, last night was the first time in over a year that I patronized one. It was close by and I needed to get a few things for a trip. Boy was I sorry, the store had the filthiest bathrooms I have ever seen, the store was dirty lacked merchandise and the cashiers were slower than molasses. I’ve had my fill, besides the prices aren’t all that great. I love the free market system......free to shop elsewhere : )

Ely points out that these services are mostly aimed at Wal-Mart's core shoppers who don't use banking services

There is your answer this is aimed at people who do not use banks, but man do dey use credit cards

We have a lot of those people here in my town. Funny, they don’t speak English...

Amen. If their service stinks, don’t go there. My beef is with the politicians who won’t allow us the choice and try to legislate WalMart into oblivion via labor and zoning regs.

Hillary Clinton used to be on the board of directors of Wal-Mart. With all the Wal-Mart bashing in the MSM, why don’t we hear how she was connected to Wal-Mart? Consider how we have heard endlessly about Dick Cheney and Halliburton. At least as much time and investigation should go into Hillary’s ties to Wal-Mart.

Preaching to the choir.

Also, Hillary’s inner circle was featured on the front page of the post today (I live in Washington). All women, 11 of the 12 were white. Not very diverse, huh?

The “news” article was nothing more than a rah-rah fluff piece that went on for three full pages. Again, this wasn’t an editorial, it was reported as news.

To me, Wal-mart is luxury shopping. I shop at the dollar stores these days.

Are you in the northeast? I’ve been to Wal-Marts there and that is common place. Here in the southeast we have clean stores with plenty of tortillas and chorizo and lots of parking lot whores and beggers.....

We are in the NW. You would think with the money Walmart makes they would have clean bathrooms and stores everywhere.
