Nurses in Katrina Euthanasia Case Offered Immunity for Grand Jury Testimony

NEW ORLEANS, June 21, 2007 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Nurses Cheri Landry and Lori Budo, who have admitted to administering lethal doses of medication to patients during the hurricane Katrina disaster, are being offered immunity from prosecution by the Louisiana Attorney General.

CNN reports that in two weeks the two will testify before a Grand Jury that four patients died after being administered what Louisiana's Attorney General, Charles Foti Jr., called a "lethal cocktail" of drugs.

In the immediate aftermath of the hurricane that devastated New Orleans in late August 2005, rumours began to fly around the internet world that patients were being killed by health care workers who wanted to flee the appalling conditions in the inner city New Orleans' Memorial Medical Center. Later, two doctors admitted that patients were euthanized, one doctor saying that he had fled the hospital rather than directly participate in killing patients.

The following July, one doctor and the two nurses were arrested and charged with four counts of second-degree murder for lethally injecting patients. Dr. Anna Pou, a head and neck surgeon who specializes in working with cancer patients, denied the charges insisting that she did not support euthanasia and claimed to have given only comfort care for the patients.

Court documents, however, assert that witnesses have testified that Dr. Pou and the two nurses took syringes full of drugs to a ward for the chronically-ill and injected four patients. 34 dead patients were found in Memorial following the Katrina disaster.

Foti told media, "We …spent almost 10 ½ months investigating and, after all of this, can only come to the conclusion that this crime had been committed."

Isn’t the answer obvious?

I know that you have never been faced with a set of choices where all of the available outcomes are bad, really bad...but you still have to choose.

You are amazing! Please give me next weeks Lotto numbers, Thanx!

That all depends. Do you have air conditioning, food in the refrigerator, clean water from the faucets, and emergency services a phone call away? If you do, then you don’t understand that they should have been killed. If you don’t, then you understand that they should have been killed. /s

I will not second guess what those people did under those circumstances. If I was dying and in horrible pain living in those hellish conditions, I would hope someone would have the compassion to shoot me up with something.

But -- there is not even a whole lot of evidence that is what happenned. The main "witness" is a publicity hound with a track record of being tossed out of hospitals. Foti, the state D.A., filed the charges as a payback to trial lawyres for funding his campaign.

Some people just never make that connection to the rest of humanity.

Some people can have a connection to humanity and to reality at the same time. Some people just curl up in a ball and avoid reality when it comes knocking.

And the shooting down of the aircraft example is from a drill mentioned in the 9/11 Commission Report on what to do if a plane was hijacked and the hijackers were threatening to fly it into a building. The question was left unresolved.

Ah, so if the United States still maintained the alert sites it once did, so that armed aircraft could be launched instantly, and a pilot would have been available to shoot down the second aircraft before it could have crashed into the WTC, he would be a murderer?

If a terminally ill patient was flying low at a high velocity on an intended collision course with a building I guess the right thing to do would be to shoot them down.

I just hope their hospital gown is closed at the back. It would be very undignified to be shot out of the sky while mooning the general population.

There is no conflict between humanity and reality. You cannot have one without the other.

I wish I could live in such a black and white world. Unfortunately, reality in this one is not so kind.

I’m glad I don’t see murderous terrorists as having moral equivalence with nursing home patients.

It still never ceases to amaze me that there are people running around on the loose who openly advocate murder. I keep waiting for the catch, or the punch line.

It’s usually something like “Zieg Heil!”

Murder is wrong. Try to stay on topic.

What you call murder is not always wrong, in the pure sense. That is the topic, is it not? I find it amusing you avoid discussing anything that doesn't fit your pure moral model. Incidentally, this sort of scenario was what I submitted for one of the questions of the potential presidential candidates. It was rejected....but there was something about underwear once.

There is no conflict between humanity and reality. You cannot have one without the other.

If you understood that then you would know that sometimes humanity requires some absolutely brutal choices. That is reality.

In your post #36 to BykrBayb made an accusation of them avoiding the question.

Are you saying that the patients were better off murdered rather than evacuated.

Is Brazil nice this time of year, Dr Mengele?
