[Ted] Kennedy makes push for [illegal] immigration bill
The Republican (Mass.) ^ | June 22, 2007 | Jo-Ann Moriarty

Posted on 06/23/2007 7:00:29 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

U.S. Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, D-Mass., told farm workers yesterday that the immigration reform bill will be brought back to the Senate floor for deliberation within days, and that the Senate is determined to vote on it, even if it means working weekends and during the July 4th weekend.

Once the energy bill clears the Senate floor, the bipartisan but controversial immigration bill, written by Kennedy and Sen. Arlen J. Specter, R-Pa., will be back before the Senate, he said.

"Dealing with immigration is central to the challenge of civil rights," Kennedy said. "We have come a long way."

Kennedy, the second longest-serving member of the Senate, said that America was a segregated nation until only 40 years ago when Congress began passing civil rights laws and much progress has been made since that time. For Kennedy, immigration is a civil rights issue as well.

Finding middle ground between citizens who want to deport the 12 million immigrants living here illegally and the majority of the population, which supports keeping families together through earned citizenship, is not going to happen by "bumper sticker solutions," Kennedy said.

"I think we should work over the weekend and through the Fourth of July recess," Kennedy said.

The Massachusetts Democrat met with farm workers and labor leaders in the wake of a new poll conducted by pollster Sergio Bendixen for New America Media. The poll found that 83 percent of illegal immigrants from Latin American are willing to comply with new provisions in the comprehensive immigration bill.

To reach legal status, the pending legislation would require illegal immigrants to pay their back taxes, pay fines for each individual within a household, keep a clean criminal record and learn English.

The poll found that by a large margin illegal immigrants are willing to undergo criminal background checks, pay fines and fees and return to their countries of origin - if they are guaranteed re-entry - to put themselves on the track for legalization, Bendixen said.

"This poll today demonstrates that this bipartisan reform bill would work," Kennedy said. "It would work because the 12 million undocumented immigrants who are here today will pay the high price to become an American citizen."

“If Mary Jo Kopechne had lived, she would be 64 years old.
Through his tireless work as a legislator,
(Sen. for Life) Edward Kennedy would have brought comfort to her in her old age.”

I’m surprised he didn’t call them “undocumented Americans” ala Harry Reid.

How Eisenhower solved illegal border crossings from Mexico

I Like Ike.

The Fiscal Cost of Low-Skill Immigrants to the U.S. Taxpayer

Take the Pledge: "I pledge to never, ever vote for anyone, for any office, who votes in favor of the Mexican Invasion Surrender Bill."

Model letter to your Senator:

To: Your Senator
From: A concerned citizen and constituent
Subject: Urge that you oppose S.1639--vote no on cloture

I urge that you vote no on S.1639 (Immigration Reform,) and vote no on cloture.

Reasons:

1) Granting any form of legal residency to those who illegally crossed our borders is drastically unfair to all those in the wider world who cannot so easily get the same deal for themselves, because they happen to be geographically disadvantaged relative to most of the illegal immigrants who come here. What about those from Asia, Africa and Europe? Should not legal residency in the US be fairly rationed among all the world's peoples?

2) To reward illegal immigrants with the very thing they were trying to achieve when they broke the law is unconscionable: It encourages law breaking in general, and yet more illegal immigration in particular. Criminals must never be granted that which they were seeking when they broke the law--in this case, any form of legal residency in the United States.

3) S. 1639 would have the effect of creating a peasant class of cheap laborers. Although not as bad as our failed experiment with slavery that ultimately ended in a civil war, the moral argument against it is analogous.

4) "Guest worker" programs of the form proposed by S. 1639 are nothing more than an attempt by business to avoid having to pay a living wage to legal US residents.

5) Eisenhower solved the problem much more simply, and for far less money. His solution also exposed the extent to which the problem is corruption in our government, and among our businesspeople. [Reference: http://www.csmonitor.com/2006/0706/p09s01-coop.html]

6) Illegal immigrants are a net financial drain on our economy. The benefits of cheap labor (and cheap food prices) are more than offset by the increased costs for social services and infrastructure. [Reference: http://www.heritage.org/Research/Immigration/sr14.cfm]

7) Current law is not the problem. The problem is lack of enforcement. If the current law cannot be enforced, why would things be any different under S. 1639?

“for deliberation within days”
If this passes, the ‘pub party is dead for me, even if Fred is the nominee and I have given $ to Tancredo.

Not that this sells me on a damn thing about this bill...

but I have to wonder if the 17% that said they would not comply with the provisions in this bill...Do they think we are stupid???

Do certain numbnuts in this country need anymore convincing that this “deal” in the Senate nees to die a very public and gruesome political death???

Even if it was 100%, I’d still be on the side of “no”...

And if what happened in L.A. is any indication where certain agencies fall on the issue...

I’m glad I am not burdened with having to figure out what side of this I’ll fall on...It was made many years ago...

Kennedy and Sen. Arlen J. Specter,

I wonder if I would ever in my lifetime support any bill written by these two bozos?

Notice how Ted call us racists without actually coming out and saying it?

All I have wanted is a secure border. I wanted it since September 12th. I already have legislation that says I can build 854 miles of fence. I don't need the 370 miles offered in the last bill or anything less then that. I don't know what Arlen and Ted's bill says yet.

And if Kennedy, Giraldo, or anyone else calls me a bigot, I am going to call them a National Security threat. Just build the Wall.

As a matter of fact, our Congress and President are a National Security threat because we have had since 9-11 to protect our borders from an outside threat. Congress has given us legislation, thanks to Duncan Hunter, but they will not fund it.

So, they (Congress and the President) are a threat to our Security. They will not follow the law and they leave our border unsecure.

That’s real big of them. They will be given more here than their homeland would ever give them. I contacted the Immigration Department in Australia. They don’t take anyone over 46 years of age!

Why is it these people can seem to write whatever the heck they dam well please and no one can take them to task for it?

I defy the “journalist” who wrote this to back up this statement.

Wasn't the back taxes provision taken out?

Michael Ramirez is one of my favorite cartoonists.
But I think he screwed up that panel (or I just disagree with him).
In my view, Dubya and Teddy K. are in the command seats of the shuttle
and the losers left aloft are the conservatives that elected Dubya
as well as the approaching-morbidity GOP.
It’s Dubya that has kicked his base to the side of the road.
