Republicans themselves brought on the whipping they suffered in the 2006 elections, Colorado state GOP chairman Dick Wadahms said in appearances in Montana.

The Dems weren’t “just standing there” - they were whipping up the Mark Foley-congressional page non-story, along with the “culture of corruption”. The Dem witchhunt against Tom DeLay, and the overblown Cheney shooting incident and ensuing DBM feeding frenzy didn’t help either.
