The bill will become law before December... This is the oldest political trick in the book ... Not one Senator ever intended for this bill to pass. It's the next one they'll be betting on.With all due respect, that's waaayyyy too cynical for me.
They were dead serious about this attempt. They did everything possible to ram it through without public bvetting or scrutiny. GWB made the second trip of his entire presidency to lobby on Capitol Hill. That is pretty darned serious.
I'd like to to give the fine Senators credit for an elaborate and well-planned kabuki, but it doesn't add up. Senators are not the "team players" you need for such a contrivance, they're down in the muck horsetraders.
You give them way too much credit.
But there is a chance that GWB will try again in January or February.

Nope, this may just be the shot heard around the world. A lot of Americans have been asleep...hopefully this woke them up.

Very sound advice. We can revel in the short term, but we must keep an eye on them to make sure they do not try to parcel pieces of this bill onto other legislation.
The enemies are crafty.
Next battle on the war is the fairness doctrine. Guess we will be burning up the phone lines on that one too.

I just got an MSNBC alert that reads In defeat for Bush, Senate rejects immigration reform bill. LMAO Typical. .....ignoring the fact that the vast majority of Senators who voted for the bill were Democrats. Headline would more accurately read: Bush, Kennedy, Reid, Graham, and others intent on securing a huge Democrat voting majority by granting amnesty to tens of millions of illegal aliens are defeated yet again"
Although granted, it's a little long for a headline ;)

It would be especially good to send a thank you note those who led the fight in the Senate, like Sessions. Not to mention Democrats who voted Nay. They are going to take some crap from Fat Boy Kennedy among others.
Among those are:
Thanks Jim Webb! (D-VA).
We have him for another 5 years, and I'm hoping he can become a bluedog Democrat.
Anyway he desrves thanks for this vote. (Nice to see "Warner - Nay, Webb - Nay" right next to each other on the roll call).

Maybe but I think we got several messages across. The fact that this POS didn’t get even a simple majority shows that these buffoons can’t take things for granted the next time around.
There is no doubt that there will be a next time but the Beltway goons needs to know that the People will be ready too.

I doubt it will be later this year. The presidential and Congressional primaries will consume all the oxygen for the rest of the year, including challenges to Senators who voted for cloture. I can see Senators trying to attach immigration related amendments to appropriations bills however.

This is the oldest political trick in the book - deliberately put up an exaggerated bill that everyone hates, defeat it, follow it up with a "much better" bill that contains all sorts of outrages that would never have been tolerated before the intial bill was floated, and get it passed. Not one Senator ever intended for this bill to pass. It's the next one they'll be betting on. That's my thought to. Get the people so exhausted opposing this bill that they won't have the energy to oppose version 2, which will likely be passed as little amendments here and there

Temporary victory.
The Left won’t fight for victory in Iraq but they will fight for victory in the Congress.

This bill was never going to pass (as it was). It didn't have a shot in hell. The hyperventalating that went on after the first cloture vote by many within our base was foolishness and sad to witness. I have two words for you: Bill Clinton.

The bill might (or might not) be dead, but the scoundrels who pushed it are still in office.
It was reported last week Bush may attempt to incorporate elements of the Amnesty bill into other bills.
