Today, U.S. Senator Jim DeMint (R-South Carolina) made the following statement after the Senate immigration bill was defeated on a cloture vote of 46-53. This motion to end debate required 60 votes for adoption.
When the U.S. Senate brought the Amnesty bill back up this week, they declared war on the American people. This act created a crisis of confidence in their government. Thankfully, the American people won today, said Senator DeMint. This is remarkable because it shows that Americans are engaged and they care deeply about their country. They care enough for their country to get mad and to fight for it, and thats the most important thing of all. Americans made phone calls and sent letters, and convinced the Senate to stop this bill.
The Senate rejected this bill and the heavy-handed tactics used to ram it through. Americans do not want more of the same amnesty and broken promises on the border. Americans want legislation to be written in public not in secret and they want Congress to engage in an open and fair debate.
There is a better way forward without this bill. The President has said that the border security measures can be implemented over the next 18 months, and they can be done under current law. Now the Administration needs to prove it and stop holding border security hostage for amnesty.
Once we have secured the border and restored trust with the American people, we can begin to take additional steps.

DeMint resigns his Senate seat next year, then runs against Graham in the primary..DeMInt wins, and wins the general election easily. Gov. Sanford can appoint a real conservative South Carolinian to the balance of DeMint's term.
GWB’s statement on the defeat is laughable.
Effective Tuesday, November 11, 2008.
I understand that shortly after that day Lindsey Graham will be holding a yard sale. Who needs all that fancy Wash DC stuff if you’re just gonna go off someplace and sell insurance?
I think they should put it on a ballot and the the American people vote.....
Oh wait, the illegals with fake ID's will only vote in Amnesty!
I got $100.00 that sez we don't see squat.
As I’ve said on other threads, it makes a mockery of the Department of Immigration and Naturalization, as well as a mockery of the Department of Homeland Security if we just leave things the way they are.
Let’s make sure to thank our Senators like DeMint, who have stood FOR the American People, and not against them, as the likes of Graham, Lott, Reid and Kennedy have done.
Can’t wait to watch the evening news tonight (which is otherwise never watched in this home) to see the egg smeared on the face of those traitorous Senators defeated today in their Shamnesty effort. Oh, and Ted Kennedy,Go and suck another egg and keep out of Americans’ lives, you loser.
Thank you M. Lurker.
Just a thu0ght from a sentimental old veteran; but July 4 is a celebration of our Independence isnt it? Can there be a more fitting symbol of that independence where the people who mad this country have a direct say in what passes for right and wrong in this country.
Just find it very apropos that the people have triumphed over the pseudo elite in having the will of the people be heard. There is just something very tight and good about the issue and the resolution of the issue at this time.
Have a safe and wonderful celebration of the independence of the good old USA!
Tom
Please! If your Senator voted the right call his/her office and tell them thank you. Very important, they withstood the pressure from the leadership and the President and still did the right thing. A thank you goes a long way.
Hiding $4 billion? IIRC, that 4 billion was suppose to come from the illegal aliens when they paid for their amnesty! However, according to Hunter, even before Bush came up with his little ploy, the funding for building the fence was ALREADY in place with Homeland Security.
If we want our borders secured now, we’ve got to PUSH Chertoff and PUSH HARD to get it done...not 20 or 40 years from now!!
It is so nice to hear common sense coming out of the mouth of a Congress critter!
Thank you Mr. De Mint.
Now we need to get on them to ENFORCE THE EXISTING IMMIGRATION LAWS that have been completely ignored, even after 9/11/01. NOW IS THE TIME!
El Presidente Jorge Boosh is laughable.
Mitt Romney is less conservative than Bush was coming out of Texas. Do we really want to try that route again?
You can put me down fer anuther hunnerd.
The 4 billion I’m referring to was the pay-off funds to sway certain senators vote on SB1389. The “funds” were to be made available before any of the proposed bill would have taken effect. We all know that any attempt to collect 4 billion dollars from illegals is, shall we say, just plain stupid.
Mitt Romney is not less conservative than George Bush. Romney has already demonstrated he is much more fiscally conservative than Bush by balancing a budget without raising taxes and that he knows how to use his veto pen.
Romney's Fiscally Conservative Record Proven
Additionally, he's already taken very tough enforcement provisons regarding illegal aliens while governor and flatly rejects amnesty and the Z-visa.
Romney's Tough Stance on Illegal Immigration Proven
Also, he has called for the repeal of McCain-Feingold, which Bush signed not vetoed, and one of his top campaign advisers, Jim Bopp, Jr., was instrumental in arguing before the SCOTUS and gettting portions of that unconstitutional bill stricken. http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1846308/posts
Further, he stood up for life in a very hostile environment in Massachusetts. Takes a bit more guts to advance the culture of life and famly values in a blue state than a red one. Plus, he's running on a very conservative pro-life and family values platform. Romney's Pro-life Record Proven
Lastly, Romney has proven he is a skillful orator and debater and will be far more successful in promoting the conservative message to all Americans and refuting the DNC propaganda.
Thanks to Sens. DeMint, Sessions, Coburn, and Cornyn for their leadership THROUGHOUT this entire sordid affair . . . which is , unfortunately probably not over. They have been true patriots and statesmen.
We will never forget what you have done for our nation. Nor will we forget what Sens. Graham, McCain, and Specter tried to do to it.
