Immigration Bill Suffers Setback [Setback?? -- WSJ spin]
WSJ ^ | June 28, 2007 | David Rogers

Posted on 06/28/2007 9:59:06 AM PDT by upchuck

Just a few excerpts from this article:

WASHINGTON -- The Senate fell 14 votes short of the 60 needed to end debate on immigration overhaul, dealing a near-fatal blow to the landmark bill and one that could very well dash President Bush's hopes of ever achieving this goal before leaving the White House.

The 46-53 roll call evolved into a blowout as a strong majority of Republicans sought cover and lined up against the administration once the outcome became apparent. Having invested substantial time in the effort, Senate Majority Leader Hary Reid (D., Nev.) was prepared to pull the bill in favor of beginning debate on a defense authorization measure for the new fiscal year that begins Oct. 1.

....

"A decent respect for the views of the American people says stop here now, let's go back to the drawing board," warned Sen. Jeff Sessions (R., Ala.), and Sen. Jim DeMint (R., S.C.) said the debate betrayed "a crisis of confidence" in the government.

....

But Sen. Lindsey Graham (R., S.C.) accused his colleagues of taking advantage of voters by holding out the false promise, he said, of something better and dashing the hopes for a politically difficult compromise.

"It is a problem America has to deal with it and we want someone else to do it because we are afraid…This is about our jobs," he said with contempt. "The American people have a low opinion of us because we can't seem to do the things we have to do because we are too worried about us and not them."

The opposition should start making the case for what it wants, not just what it is against.

Exactly. It's easy for a gang-mentality to scream AGAINST something.

We'll see if the gang-mentality can push FOR something to get passed or if the steam has all gone.

I didn't like the immigration bill...but it was better than nothing being passed IMO.

I have a feeling that come election time Graham will not be helping with America any longer. When he is thrown out of office; they should barr him for life from being a lobbyist.

Very observant. After Sh$tlery has time to have her cronies leak info from the 700 FBI files that were scanned to a staff member of each of the Anti-Shamnesty members of Congress, it will somehow likely get passed after the C-Span camera man falls asleep at 2 am.

How would it be “better,” taking into account that Bush and Chertoff are willing to hold enforcement hostage to amnesty?

In the Battle of Thermopylae of 480 BC, an alliance of Greek city-states fought the invading Persian Empire at the pass of Thermopylae in central Greece. Vastly outnumbered, the Greeks held back the Persians for three days in one of history's most famous last stands. A small force led by King Leonidas of Sparta blocked the only road through which the massive army of Xerxes I of Persia (Xerxes the Great) could pass. After three days of battle, a local resident named Ephialtes betrayed the Greeks by revealing a mountain path that led behind the Greek lines. Dismissing the rest of the army, King Leonidas stayed behind with 300 Spartans and 700 Thespian volunteers. The Persians succeeded in taking the pass but sustained heavy losses, extremely disproportionate to those of the Greeks. The fierce resistance of the Spartan-led army offered Athens the invaluable time to prepare for a decisive naval battle that would come to determine the outcome of the war. The subsequent Greek victory at the Battle of Salamis left much of the Persian Empire's navy destroyed and Xerxes was forced to retreat back to Asia, leaving his army in Greece under Mardonius, who was to meet the Greeks in battle one last time. The Spartans assembled at full strength and led a pan-Greek army that defeated the Persians decisively at the Battle of Plataea, ending the Greco-Persian War and with it the expansion of the Persian Empire into Europe.

The performance of the defenders at the battle of Thermopylae is often used as an example of the advantages of training, equipment, and good use of terrain to maximize an army's potential,[5] and has become a symbol of courage against overwhelming odds. Even more, both ancient and modern writers used the Battle of Thermopylae as an example of the superior power of a well trained army defending native soil.

There is also a large political significance of the Battle of Thermopylae, in that it was the first defining moment in which the disunified Greek city states first came together to form a significant alliance. It also possibly signified the beginning of the end for the Persian empire - drawing strength from the Battle, the Greeks began forming assaults against the Persian Empire, as a national body rather than small city states.

Dilios: He did not wish tribute, nor song, or monuments or poems of war and valor. His wish was simple. "Remember us" he said to me. That was his hope, should any free soul come across that place, in all the countless centuries yet to be. "May all our voices whisper to you from the ageless stones, "Go tell the Spartans, passerby, that here by Spartan law, we lie." And so my king died, and my brothers died; barely a year ago. Long I pondered my king's cryptic talk of victory, but time has proven him wise, for from free Greek to free Greek, the word was spread that bold Leonidas and his 300, so far from home, laid down their lives... not just for Sparta, but for all Greece and the promise this country holds. Now here on this ragged patch of earth called Plateaea, let his hordes face obliteration! Just there, the barbarians gather, sheer terror gripping tight their hearts with icy fingers, knowing full well what merciless horrors they suffered at the swords and spears of 300. Yet they stare now across the plain at 10,000 Spartans commanding 30,000 free Greeks! Ho! The enemy outnumber us a paltry three to one! Good odds for any Greek. This day we rescue a world from mysticism and tyranny, and usher in a future brighter than anything we could imagine. Give thanks, men, to Leonidas and the brave 300! To victory!

Battle of Salamis

The next morning (possibly September 28, but the exact date is unknown; the Hellenic Navy celebrates September 12 as Battle of Salamis Day), the Persians were exhausted from searching for the Greeks all night, but they sailed in to the straits anyway to attack the Greek fleet. When it became obvious to the Greeks that the battle was inevitable morale rose, the fleet enthusiastically took to sea and started singing the "paean"

Forward, sons of the Greeks,
Your children, your women, the altars of the gods of your fathers
And the graves of your forebears:
Now is the fight for everything.

Conservatives, we did it. We held OUR Congress accountable, against seemingly a unsurmountable invasion backed by those who attempt to control with wealth and greed. Let them know forever more, this is OUR country, OUR government. The only power they have is what we lend them. And today we showed that WE are THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, where freedom exists because we are willing to fight for it.

It would be better because people continuing to stream across the border, employers not being held accountable, and illegals still being illegal can't go on.

The bill would have staunched at least some of this...perhaps a lot.

>>It would be better because people continuing to stream across the border,<<

Kennedy promised they would stop that by the 1986 amnesty bill. Do you trust him, or Bush, or Chertoff?

>>employers not being held accountable,<<

Because Bush and Chertoff don’t want to do their jobs. Chertoff won’t tell you about his EEVS that determined (incorrectly) that a staffer of the House Immigration Subcommittee, who had been a citizen for 10 years, was illegal. I am in favor of developing such a system, but they need to prove that it works before we decide how to handle the 10-30 million illegals already here.

>>and illegals still being illegal can’t go on.<<

So the solution is to make them instantly legal? I don’t think so.

>>The bill would have staunched at least some of this...perhaps a lot.<<

I guess you believe Kennedy, Bush and Chertoff. I don’t. And I have not given up hope of electing better people in 2008.

The behavior of the Senate and the Pres about this bill could be described as deranged. One Freeper and I decided that they had some kind of gun being held to their heads--and I think that gun is in the form of grassroots enforcement of immigration law. States are passing laws, "sanctuary cities" are starting to be criticized, cities are trying to pass laws.

the ACLU can't be everywhere to harass the citizenry and deny the majority will.

But the Chamber of Commerce and other employers of black market labor are definitely starting to feel the heat.

So I believe they were putting the heat on the Senate and the Prez, which explains the secretive dirty-dealing and lack of debate involving this deal.

This bill was not so much amnesty for illegal aliens as it was amnesty for the Chamber of Commerce. It would have made state and local efforts at enforcement impossible--which would let the Chamber off the hook.

With the death of this bill, states are starting to step in. OK makes a wonderful example.

I believe we'll see momentum toward enforcement, but not necessarily by the fed.

In '86 immigration was not the hot-button issue it is today. People did not care. Abortion was the hot-button issue for conservatives. Now that George Bush has moved on abortion, conservatives have switched their agenda and want action on immigration.

Because Bush and Chertoff don’t want to do their jobs.

That's my point. If you think they're not doing their jobs, then the problem is still there.

I think conservatives will now sit on their haunches thinking they have "won a victory".

Yet the problem remains. A bill would at least got the ball rolling.

OK in the spirit of the thread, What is your solution?
::::::
The short version.

1. Ensure that a conservative President is elected in 2008. Without that, we are in major trouble across MANY fronts, and illegal immigration is just one. Fascism and socialism will be major problems.

2. Insist the Congress BUILD THE FENCE. The only thing that will STOP ILLEGALS. They must not be allowed to ENTER OR RE-ENTER this country. Laws do not work — fences do. The ONLY acceptable solution, otherwise the rest is a waste of time.

3. Properly use the 2008 election to install sane, patriotic, conservatives who care about America, into office in place of as many RINOs as possible. It goes without saying that the vote-grubbing, power-centric socialists need to be replaced as far as possible as well.

4. Develop a rational plan to deal with the issues of border security and the identification of the illegals that are in this country. Such a plan would NOT be a hasty process, it would be one with the visibility and APPROVAL of the AMERICAN VOTING MAJORITY, and would serve the American citizen FIRST AND FOREMOST, and NOT the twisted politics of Washington or any special interest group. The plan would provide a path for both temporary workers and those who are truly interested in EARNING U.S. CITIZENSHIP. Those who have broken the law will pay a penalty, they will EARN CITIZENSHIP, following the rules of the program, or leave the country permanently under the threat of severe penalty never to be allowed to return.

5. In general, any plan WILL RESPECT AMERICAN SOVERIGNTY, AMERICAN SECURITY, and PROTECT OUR SYSTEM OF LAWS, and the rights and majority will of the American citizen, first and foremost. Our borders will remain closed to any and all illegal people, and strict penalties must be upheld for not respecting U.S. immigration and border laws. This includes the enforcement of laws PROHIBITING THE HIRING OF ILLEGALS with severe penalties for both individuals and corporations.

It will be up to the voters and citizens to make this happen, and to insist on the type of people in government that will work for the people, and not perverted, damaging agendas that are driven by globalist, elitist arrogance.

End of short response :-) God Bless America!!!

See previous post—funny you should mention abortion, because I think state and local efforts at legislation will eventually make Roe moot. Now that the bill is dead, bills in state legs and municipalities are being written. It does mean some competition between the states—but that will provide an outlet for illegals fleeing an unfriendly state to a friendlier one...

Part of the problem with this bill is that it would have forever been "Bush's Bill. And not just the bill, but the future costs.

Future Democrat houses of Congrsses in subsiquent years would have demanded and passed their form or Social Security reform or taxation and revised HillaryCare all based upon, "this is what Bush did" logic.

If the Dems make a mess of their own, they have to clean it up.

I don't think there are very many opposed to this measure that don't beleive some sort of step by step true reform will be needed as time passes.

What they insist upon, however, is that enforcement and border control must begin now without shilly shallying around dodging the issue.

I have been around hundreds of immigrant workers. I am assuming from hindsight that more than I thought were illegal. They didn't work for me. I helped take up a collection to bury the toddler of one with employer paycheck problems. These people are both the good and the bad.

The problem is that illegals, unlike other cross sections of immigrants have a higher percentage of bad and ZERO accountability and are a great economic burden.

This bill was wholesale innovation and not true reform.

Furthermore, you can't reform law you are not attempting to use.

Yes, I think abortion is going to come down to the state level as well as many thought it should be all along.

However, George Bush's actions in barring partial birth and stem cell activities, not to mention the appointments of Roberts and Alito have helped to curtail the heinous pro-death activitiy going on currently.

"These people are both the good and the bad."

Good or bad, they're all criminals. Treat them as such. Locate, arrest, deport. After, of course, closing the border by whatever means necessary.
