The defeat of amnesty for illegal aliens is a good moment. Against widespread expectations, a 53 to 46 majority voted against it. The conservative grass roots did an outstanding job of framing the issue with honesty and well-informed candor. The American people saw it for what it was and wouldn't stand for it.
However, this isn't the end of it. In fact, the worst thing that could be done is for opponents to declare victory and lose focus. The key is to read between the lines.
The fact is, the majority of the U.S. Senate supports some form of amnesty for illegal aliens. We were fortunate that those people were unable to unite on how to give it to them, and how many minor concessions to grant to supporters of border security. There were, in fact, a few good things in the bill, even though the bill as a whole was against the national interest. It turns out that there are two widely different groups who support this- politically correct liberals and globalist, corporatist RINO's. Some of those RINO's have cast many conservative votes. But the two were unable form enough unity to put it over the top. Some who voted for the bill did so reluctantly, and would be willing to support another amnesty bill, provided it includes things they called for.
Even at that, this bill would have succeeded had not the American people, prompted by conservative activists, jammed the phone lines and e-mails with angry messages warning of opposition at the polls. But the people who want to grant amnesty to some 20 million illegals want it badly, for their own selfish purposes. So they may have set aside their plans for the time being, but they will be back. This isn't the last of it.
This needs to be addressesd in the 2008 elections. The people that want top job need to come out with their intentions on this issue.
You are right, this issue is far from over. We need to stress enforcement of existing laws and expect results first.
Oh, and keep a close eye on any and all legislation to make sure they don’t tag some of this awful bill onto other bills!
“I” before “e,” except after “c.”
You are correct. Several traitors, who happen to be in the Senate, marched in front of cameras and vowed to "continue the fight after elections had changed the political landscape".
Thank you Senator Sessions for leading the battle to save OUR country!
Keep calling, keep faxing, BIG GIANT LETTERS....
WHERE IS MY DAMN DUNCAN HUNTER FENCE????
That’s what I do first thing every morning!
Keep the faith!
At least Sen. Robert Byrd was on the right side of this issue. I wonder if he would be interested in donning his sheets to take care of this problem if Congress can’t handle it. A few white sheets on the border might put a stop to the border invasion and scare the bejeebers out of those who would illegally tread on our sacred soil.
Here is a spreadsheet of immigration votes with some statistics/analysis

I hope this helps your emails/notes/faxes etc. to those who helped and those who hurt...
TERM LIMITS.
Short of that, do not vote for incumbents, ever, for any reason at all.

Excel 2007: http://www.sendspace.com/file/21i5ps
I hope this helps your emails/notes/faxes etc. to those who helped and those who hurt...it is critical that you know how your senators voted so that they can be properly held accountable at election time in 1, 3, or 5 years. Let the good guys know how much you appreciate their efforts, and let the bad guys know that their actions on this bill will haunt them forever.
Fact is, we would be best served by a continuing Congressional impasse on immigration reform.
The issue really needs to be aired in the '08 Presidential campaign. We need to know how every candidate -- for the Presidency, the Senate and the House -- views the issue and how they would write and prosecute the law.
Immigration is an issue that the Democrats most definitely do NOT want to address in the context of a campaign. At the same time, the issue would serve to separate the pretenders from the contenders on the Republican side.
The people need to resolve this issue. Not the politicians.
Yeah, we know. But celebrate the victory — it’s a big one. And learn from it and take heart from it.
I don't trust the lying bastards. One sound bite does not a believer make me.
Prove it!
” The Left will never quit...”
That’s true, but it is not The Left alone that is doing this. There are many business interests who want a steady supply of cheap labor to keep wages down and their profits and executive bonuses higher. The forces of political correctness have formed an informal but potent alliance with forces of corporate greed.
>>I cant imagine the govt rolling dead on this at all, infact I sense if this continues to go downhill for them they will create or declare some kind of emergency or crisis that requires making the illegals legal...Comments Please...<<
It is congress’s job to figure out what to do with the 20 million illegals, but Bush can be very creative when he really wants something. He is not supposed to use executive orders to grant amnesty, but I keep imagining him like General Jack Ripper in Dr. Strangelove:
“General Turgidson, I find this very difficult to understand. I was under the impression that I was the only one in authority to order the use of nuclear weapons.
That’s right, sir, you are the only person authorized to do so. And although I, uh, hate to judge before all the facts are in, it’s beginning to look like, uh, General Ripper exceeded his authority.”
this will be settled by the 2008 elections
Demand a border fence! Build it NOW!! Beef up the border patrol and close our borders!
