BOULDER University of Colorado students paid $160,000 in April to hear former U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan say the people of the world must work together to bring about peace.
The amount came as a surprise Wednesday to several members of CU's board of regents, who saw the figure on a routine list of speakers and their fees for the school year that just ended.
Annan was far ahead of the second-highest-paid speaker, liberal historian and activist Howard Zinn, who received $15,500.
The amount for the one-hour speech brought calls from some regents for more frequent audits of student government, which has a $33.8 million annual budget and oversees most campus speaking engagements. It hasn't had a full review in four years, though the student health center has been monitored, campus auditor Jean Stewart told the board.
"It's a large budget, and you have young, inexperienced people (in student government)," Regent Tom Lucero said following the Wednesday meeting. He raised the question of Annan's fee.
Of the $160,000, Annan received $100,000. The rest was for transportation, lodging, food and two security men...

No wonder it costs so much for a college non education these days.
Paying for liberal professors like Churchill and paying big $’s for speakers like this pos and Edwards speaking on poverty at UC Davis are outrages.
Didn’t Billy Jeff Clintoon get some nice gigs at colleges after he looted the White House?
The University system is a mess. CU says that it has to raise tuition 14 percent next year.
Now we see why. They can not manage the money that they already have...so they want more.
Bubba is a gifter in chief.
Thanks George. This is disgraceful and I’ll add it to my list of complaints. I would bet an effort is underway to stop the tuition raising and this is a good example of waste and abuse of university funds.
Even giving Howard Zinn $15,500 is a huge waste of the parents money. For a one hour rant on liberal politics ?
Zinn should pay CU. Ward should not still be getting paychecks.
I know alumns who have stopped sending CU money. The tuition should not go up until CU starts to make budget cuts first. I can think of one whole dept that is not needed.
Stopping higher tuition isn’t going to happen. These universities are no different than any other Democrat or socialist institution. They have to increase fees to pay for the folly represented by the left. If they can indoctrinate the students they figure they can take over the world. Just like they are doing with K-12.
14% increase will go over really big with any conservatives with children and grandchildren.
Wouldn’t how much of that has been wasted $’s defending Churchhill?
