PARIS - Barbra Streisand performed her first-ever concert in France this week and was rewarded with a medal of the Legion of Honor.
French President Nicolas Sarkozy awarded the medal to Streisand in a ceremony Thursday, the first time he has bestowed the honor since taking over from Jacques Chirac last month.
"You are the America that we love," said Sarkozy, who is seen as more U.S.-friendly than Chirac. "Women like you ... do a lot to bring our two peoples together."
Onlookers included French crooner Charles Aznavour and actor Alain Delon.
Sarkozy's wife, Cecilia, went to Streisand's sole concert in France, at Paris' Bercy stadium Tuesday.
Streisand told Sarkozy, a conservative, that he reminded her of former U.S. Presidents Kennedy and Clinton, "who appreciated art and recognized the importance of the arts in the world."
"I am deeply honored to be joining the playwrights, heads of state, artists and leaders who have accepted this honor before me," Streisand, 65, said in a statement. "I leave with a sense of inspiration and responsibility as an artist to always reflect the truth and as a citizen to try and create a world of justice, compassion, equality and peace - one with a little more music and a little more joy."
Created by Napoleon Bonaparte in the early 19th century, the Legion of Honor is France's elite national merit society. Although foreigners cannot be officially inducted into the Legion, they are routinely made honorary recipients.
Recent honorees include Jerry Lewis, Valentino and Norman Mailer.
On the Net:
Maybe she’ll move there.
French me baby.......Bill Clinton.
That’s the perfect headline—you don’t even need to read the story.
Never trust a frenchman.
It is wrong to be French! -Al Bundy citing the commandments of Iron Head Hayes
I guess Sarkozy can join
I don’t think either Kennedy or Clinton appreciated art unless it was a woman stripped naked lying underneath them.
“Streisand told Sarkozy, a conservative, that he reminded her of former U.S. Presidents Kennedy and Clinton, “who appreciated the female body and recognized the importance of having sex in the White House.”
“Recent honorees include Jerry Lewis, Valentino and Norman Mailer.”
Wow. I always thought the Jerry Lewis-French thing was a joke. LOL!
And Sarkozy claims to be conservative...
They fight with their feet. (run?)
And (blank) with their face. (whine?)
Yep, Jerry Lewis and Norman Mailer. That’s the category this belongs in all right. Something to remember the next time you hear about European sophistication.
Hey Babs, how much did tickets to your concert cost??
I still love how collectors holding expensive “rare” tickets to her last farewell concert suddenly find them of little value after she has another tour.
Lousy politics, great voice.
"Conservative" is a relative term...
"I would like to say one thing, in what is my conception of the Republic, security is the responsibility of the State, I am against militias, I am against the private ownership of firearms, and Im trying to make you think about that."
"If you are assaulted by an armed burglar, hell use his weapon more effectively than you anyway so youre risking your life. If the criminal is not armed and you are and you shoot, your life will be ruined, because killing someone over a theft is not in line with the republican values that are mine."
"The private ownership of firearms is dangerous. I understand your exasperation for having been burglarized two times, I understand the fear that your wife and daughter may have but the answer is in the efficiency of the police and the efficiency of the judiciary process, the answer is not in having guns at home." - French Presidential Candidate Nicolas Sarkozy
But, but, but wasn’t little Nick Sarkosy supposed to be different?
She can go ahead and be the French they love—I don’t mind.
Oh BARF, Sarkozy, we expected better from you. You pledge to deport the muslim hordes, then you honor the moonbat whores. France is still in play.
Can you provide a link/attribution/quote, etc?
If an American candidate said that, he would be instant TOAST!
The mental image of those two doing that is too horrific to imagine.
But not with Barbra Streisand, right?
Streisand would be loved by France only if she stays away. She is a Jew, and it would be a big mistake for her to move to France and wake up one morning to have swastikas spray painted on her mansion, no matter where it would be located. That's what's happening now in France and in Quebec ( Montreal).
As a liberal she is blind to that , of course.
Conservative by French standards means his politics are about comparable to Bill Clinton.
In other words, less liberal than the unabashed French Socialists than Mitterand (who would be left of Kucinich by our standards) but nothing like Reagan, let alone even a Rockefeller Republican.
Sarky...you broke my heart! You’re nothing to me now. You’re not a conservative brother...you’re nothing. If you want to come to America for a visit, let me know a few days before so that I can leave. (Al can show you around.)
Babs is French Toast.
Laura said it all”Shut-up and sing.”
Babs—don’t let the door hit you on the way out. Please move to France, where you are much more appreciated. Won’t hurt my feelings.

Translation: “Come to my suite so I can give you a BJ as I did those two, please, please PLEASE! My docile hubby didn’t come to France with me.....”
