The National Anthem of the United States of America
Francis Scott Key

Posted on 07/04/2007 3:43:23 AM PDT by azhenfud

Oh, say, can you see, by the dawn's early light, What so proudly we hail'd at the twilight's last gleaming? Whose broad stripes and bright stars, thro' the perilous fight, O'er the ramparts we watch'd, were so gallantly streaming? And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof thro' the night that our flag was still there. O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

On the shore dimly seen thro' the mists of the deep, Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes, What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep, As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?

Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam, In full glory reflected, now shines on the stream: 'T is the star-spangled banner: O, long may it wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

And where is that band who so vauntingly swore That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion A home and a country should leave us no more? Their blood has wash'd out their foul footsteps' pollution. No refuge could save the hireling and slave From the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave: And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

O, thus be it ever when freemen shall stand, Between their lov'd homes and the war's desolation; Blest with vict'ry and peace, may the heav'n-rescued land Praise the Pow'r that hath made and preserv'd us as a nation! Then conquer we must, when our cause. it is just, And this be our motto: "In God is our trust" And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

Very mice! Personally, I’ve always preferred the “Battle Hymn of the Republic” but I guess that its not PC to sing it at public events anymore.

When the President and Senate were so determined to force upon Americans amnesty for illegal aliens and it seemed inevetible CIR would be passed counter to the objections to America’s majority, I’d almost thought dead the precepts this nation’s Founders held as they drafted the Declaration of Independence - that governments derive their powers from the governed.

Proudly, American Patriots stood up, made their voices heard as one, and came through reproving the genius of those whose blood, sweat, tears, and prayers found inspiration to form the Greatest nation on Earth.

We didn’t have troops in the streets raiding objectors, we didn’t have armed conflicts - we had America’s concept of government of the people, for the people, and by the people work to its fullest potential.

Sometimes you have to roll the dice and post it twice.

(I'll stop now.)

As a Southerner, “Battle Hymn of the Republic” was accepted, even loved, but we loved “Dixie.” Now Dixie is not PC, and you almost never hear it played.
Of course, the National Anthem frequently brings tears to my eyes.

Thank you, and a Happy Independence Day to you and all my fellow FReepers. Actually, I prefer Yankee Doodle for today, the National Anthem being inspired by The War of 1812, although some do consider that a continuation of the Revolutionary War. IIRC, Yankee Doodle was played by some of the British troops as they marched to battle. I also recall that they weren’t playing it after they met the Colonials.

AMERICA ALL OTHER LANDS ABOVE

America all other lands above
Freedom being the dearest love
And nowhere else will one find
Honor, flag, country doth bind
Every heart in a common stand
Across this fair, blessed land.

America all other lands above
Freedom being the dearest love
What patriot will hath wrought
Beyond the wars that were fought
Is a land of liberty for all
Instructed in law by God's great call.

America all other lands above
Freedom being the dearest love
Happiness towers above mere self
A people that seeks Heaven's help
Finds victory within its sight
And peace beneath the starry bright.

America all other lands above
Freedom being the dearest love
The flame of freedom thou keep
So mankind thy spirit may reap
A wonder to the world you are
America, God's land beyond compare.

America, all other lands above,
Fair and blessed land of lands by God above.

"I’ve always preferred the “Battle Hymn of the Republic”

I believe it's only played on B-52's during bombing runs on the ICBM complex at Laputa.

How about that? I alsways thought the words were:

"Oh, say, can you see, by the dawn's early light,
What so proudly we hail'd at the twilight's last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars, thro' the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watch'd, were so gallantly streaming?

I was attending Air force Altitude Training at Ellsworth AFB. Class began at 8:00 and we were all in our seats around 7:50 sippin' coffee and introducing ourselves. The Captain on my right was Captain Key. When I said hello I pointed at his nametag and asked, "Any relation?".

You can imagine my surprise when he said, "Thanks for asking. I'm his great, great, great, great grand nephew!"

Meanwhile, at a Yankee game, a newly arrived Puerto Rican baseball fan jumped up and shouted "NO, I'm sittin' behind this darn pillar! but it was nice of you to sing Jose can you see?"

“God Bless America” . Easy tune, easy words, and stirring. Kate Smith did it right. Thank you Irving Berlin.

.....If you ever are in Baltimore stop by Ft McHenry....it’s both educational and moving....and BTW after the bombardment of the Fort failed the Brits tried an end run by putting troops ashore to circle around and approach Baltimore.....they were repulsed by ARMED CITIZENS who fought them off!...now, that’s what I call the 2nd Ammendment in action!
