Al Gore's Live Earth: Has Global Warming Hysteria 'Jumped the Shark'
The American Thinker ^ | July 6, 2007 | John Berlau

Posted on 07/06/2007 3:02:03 PM PDT by Eric Blair 2084

This weekend, rock stars will jet around the world, cars and buses will clog traffic, and elaborate sound stages will be set up to burn massive amounts of fuel to send the message to fans at home that they had better conserve their energy or face the allegedly dire threat of global warming.

The Live Earth concerts, which start this Saturday, July 7, are also one last chance for Baby Boomers to relive the "flower power" activism of the '60s. In a recent interview in Rolling Stone, former Vice President Al Gore invoked music icon Bob Dylan to promote the importance of these concerts. Citing Dylan's '60 anthem "The Times They Are A-Changin'". Gore rambled: "What's the old Bob Dylan line? 'Come senators, congressmen, please heed the call/Rattle your windows' - what's the rest of it? - 'for the times they are a-changin'."

But there's just one problem with invoking Dylan to hype the global warming scare. And that is that Dylan himself has expressed skepticism -- to the same magazine -- at the notion that global warming is a catastrophe. When he was asked by Rolling Stone founder and publisher Jann Wenner in the magazine's 40th anniversary issue if he worried about global warming, Dylan replied with an unexpected rejoinder. He asked Wenner, "Where's the global warming? It's freezing here." Wenner, who has blanketed Rolling Stone and his other magazine Men's Journal with doom-and gloom climate change stories (that often bash my organization, the Competitive Enterprise Institute), quickly moved on to other topics after he received his comeuppance.

Yet Dylan's latest statement may signal that in the global warming debate, the times are changing. Even independent-minded celebrities are now questioning the establishment media orthodoxy that the debate over global warming and its effects are all but over.

Arctic Monkeys sit out Live Earth

Arctic Monkeys believe it would be “hypocritical” to play at this weekend’s Live Earth concerts, they have revealed.

The Sheffield sensations are not involved in the high-profile shows, which take place simultaneously across the globe on Saturday.

In a new interview, they explained that the heavyweight production involved in touring precludes them from getting involved in climate change events.

Drummer Matt Helders said: “We’re using enough power for 10 houses just for lighting. It’d be a bit hypocritical.”

Meanwhile, bass player Nick O’Malley agreed, commenting: “And we’re always jetting off on aeroplanes.”

Arctic Monkeys release a new single, “Fluorescent Adolescent,” on Monday in Britain.

Algore and warming — jumped.

The world needs something new to get fussed up about.

What would be a good replacement?

How about Global Cooling? Wait a minute, my advisors are whispering something in my ear...uh, huh, oh, it has, when?, really?!...

Never mind, it seems as though that idea was already tried a few decades ago.

I don’t know about the rest of you folk, but when I think Rock-and-roll and must-see show, Al Gore is the first thing that pops in my head.

I'm with you. Just like when one thinks of "public health" the first name that pops into your head is Ted Kennedy.

I agree. Unlike Fonzie, I'd bet that Algore doesn't actually make it over the shark. He'll land in the shark tank and be devoured by them.

Please remember that any time mentioning the climate, the word CRISIS must be used.

I can tell any time someone is officially plugging the Live Earth shindig. They must mention Climate Crisis.

Dylan is Dylan...he transcends the labels that define those of us who aren’t Dylan..... or in the case of AlGore, even a smidgen Dylanesque

“Jumping the Shark” as the article points out is from an episode of an aged “Happy Days” when Fonzie on water skis jumps a shark. It was the tipping point for the series and signaled its decline. They were grasping for story lines.

I remember that episode. I remember thinking it was sort of silly.

What's the old Bob Dylan line? 'Come senators, congressmen, please heed the call/Rattle your windows' - what's the rest of it? - 'for the times they are a-changin'."

Gore's such a freaking bouchedag. If he were a true fan of Bob Dylan, nee Bobby Zimmerman; he'd know that the lyrica are, "Senators, Congressmen, please heed the call. Don't stand in the doorway. Don't block up the hall".

I have a sneaking suspicion that this fiasco is going to be nothing more than a fart in a snowstorm. Majorly hyped. Tons of $$$ thrown its way.

Like any other "group consciousness raising" event made even more desperate by trying to un-earth and revitalize the whole "Woodstock schlock". This too will also prove embarrassingly, hypocritically insignificant.

In The Rolling Stone interview with Dylan, Jann Wenner was baiting him about the very subject and Bob replied with something like, "What global warming? It's freezing in here."

Times they are a-changing? Well, duh.

Bob said in the same interview that politicians ain't gonna solve nobody's problems.

The longer I live, the more I believe that's about right. Choice comes down to who will "mess" things up less.
