Fired McCain Aides May Be Hired by Thompson

WASHINGTON — The downsizing of Senator McCain's presidential campaign is coming at an opportune time for Fred Thompson, the former Tennessee senator who is likely to jump into the race officially any day now and seeking to build a campaign staff in the early primary states.

Struggling with a shortage of cash, Mr. McCain's campaign announced last week that it was laying off dozens of staff members, including about half of his paid team in Iowa and New Hampshire.

While there is no evidence of an outright pillaging of Mr. McCain's departed aides, Republican sources in those states say Mr. Thompson's emerging campaign is the likeliest landing spot. Aside from Mr. Thompson's obvious need for staff — assuming he enters the race — the two are closely aligned ideologically, and Mr. Thompson even endorsed Mr. McCain when he sought the White House in 2000.

The McCain/Thompson connection really bothers me. If Thompson wins and then choose McCain as VP, I will be really disappointed.

Not even the Tidy Bowl man could pull McCain out of the vortex now.

Nero McCain fiddles while his campaign burns.

They are not that similar - their voting patterns were different, Fred now says that CFR didn’t turn out how he hoped, Fred wants to close the borders and opposes amnesty. 2000 was 7 yrs ago.

That’s the concern I have - Thompson may just be McCain-lite.

The elves weren't the reason McPain tanked. They had him making appearances on late night TV, getting softball questions from Leno and Letterman, and he was considered the front-runner for the Pubbie nomination during 2006. It was McCain's fervent embrace of shamnesty that shot down his airplane.

Fred needs experienced people, who have been thinking about 2008 for a LONG time on his side. He won't depend exclusively on them, but will utilize their skills as he needs them.

I would suggest that Thompson be choosy. McCain can’t be so dumb that he made all of those mistakes by himself.

To be fair, he doesn’t just have McCain people around him, he has Bush people directing him also, such as Mrs. Carville.

Not only did Thompson “endorse” McCain’s candidacy in 2000, but he co-chaired the McCain campaign!

Yeah whatever...

Look at it this way... you're a McCain supporter, for reasons apparently only to yourself. Your candidate is currently doing an imitation of a 20-ton weight dropped from a hight of 30,000 feet. With a jet-booster pack driving it down. You were even a member of the campaign staff before you were let go due to cost-cutting measures.

So... who do you join up with? Let's take a look at the options:

Behind Door #1 stands a former Mayor of New York City. He is a social liberal -- anti-gun, pro-gay, pro-abortion -- who is trying to trade on the fact that he happened to be Mayor of NYC on 9/11 and that he's perceived as "tough", despite his lisp and penchant for cross-dressing in public. he also has more skeletons in his closet than are at the local graveyard.

Behind Door #2 is the former Governor of Massachusetts. He looks the part, but also has the air of a used-car salesman. Despite having run on liberal platforms since 1994 (pro-choice, ant-gun, pro-gay), he now claims to be a true conservative. Maybe it's true, but you have the nagging feeling that he'd also like to sell you a bridge or two.

Door #3 is quite large, because it houses a pack of "other" candidates, most of whom are saying something to the effect of: "HEY! OVER HERE!!! LOOK AT ME! I'M A CONSERVATIVE, FOR CRYING OUT LOUD... NEVER MIND THAT I'VE NEVER SPENT ANY EFFORT BUILDING UP A NATIONAL PRESENCE FOR MYSELF, I CAN BE PRESIDENT. REALLY. HONEST. HEY! WHERE ARE YOU GOING??? LOOK AT ME!!! FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, PLEASE LOOK AT ME!!!!!!!"

Behind Door #4 is Fred Thompson. A solid conservative without being an ideologue. He even has some past ties to McCain, despite their more recent differences. He clearly has momentum going for him, and being on a winning team is always good for the ol' resume.

Now, barring the true political mercenary, who will just go to the highest bidder, the only real choices are Thompson and Romney, the former more so than the latter.

At some point in his McCain was Conservative. It is when he is running for office of president does the real liberal comes out.

“McCain’s voting record in the 109th Congress is the third most conservative (as of November 2005). On the other hand, his voting record during the 107th Congress, from January 2001 through November of 2002, places him as the 6th most liberal Republican senator, according to the same data and analysis at voteview.com.”

If these McCain staff losers were dumb enough to jump on McCains Straight Jacket Express, why would Fredb Thompson want to hire them?

Snake Head Carville’s wife is helping too.

I am starting to have real problems with Thompson.

Ditch the losers Fred, Get some real winners onborad.

Your campaign is looking more like one run by the likes of that famous democratic loser Bob Strum.
