Missouri Bans Planned Parenthood from School Sex Ed Classes

JEFFERSON CITY, July 9, 2007 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The state of Missouri has voted to improve oversight of abortion facilities and ban abortionists or people associated with abortion clinics from teaching in schools and providing school materials. The new law reclassifies abortion mills as "ambulatory surgical centers," which places them under stricter regulations and puts them under the scrutiny of state officials.

Governor Blunt said at the signing ceremony that the new law is "one of the strongest pieces of pro-life legislation in Missouri history".

Planned Parenthood of Missouri complained that the new law, signed yesterday by Governor Matt Blunt, will require them to spend up to $2 million to refit their abortion mills in order to meet the standards required under the new classification. Paula Gianino, president of Planned Parenthood for the St. Louis Region, said the new law could leave only one abortion facility in the state.

Governor Blunt, however, argued that abortion mills should be able to meet the same standards as other medical facilities. "I say if they can't meet the same basic requirements that other (medical) providers do, then they should shut down," Blunt said.

The law, promoted by Missouri Right to Life, also makes it illegal for Planned Parenthood or other abortionist groups to teach school sex education classes and permits abstinence-only sex-ed curricula. Currently Planned Parenthood, the richest and most powerful abortion organization in the world, teaches in up to 40 St. Louis-area schools.

Gianino told St. Louis Today that the group is considering legal action to stop the law from taking effect.

Smaller, indirect legal measures against abortionists have born fruit in the US. In some states, abortion has been made all but unavailable due to closures of individual facilities on health and safety-related grounds.

Such incremental measures as the Missouri bill underscore growing public opposition to abortion. According to polls the rise in opposition to abortion is most noticeable among younger and college-educated citizens. In 2006, 30,117 respondents in 48 states showed that as many as 59% of US citizens believe that abortion ends a human life.

Fantastic news! And I am sure I know why it was needed. In MA, planned parenthood not only teaches, they write bills for the legislature to pass for them. Ant-parental rights bills.

Great news, but it’s not over yet. Now it has to get by the judges.

The law's reasonable - if Planned Parenthood can't meet health and safety standards, their clinics deserve to be shut down. I'd like to see them convince a judge operating a dangerous clinic is advancing "choice" for women.

Wow!! There he goes again! He is just exceptional. We are so lucky to have him.

Not entirely sure about the abstinence only thing. I know lots on this forum would agree with that stance but teenagers and uncontrolled hormones don’t always manage that. I don’t have a problem with teaching birth control but abortion IS NEVER an option!! Once the baby is there, it’s too late.

The leftist judges who march to the hippie drumbeat will try to make sure that amoral fornication is promoted in public schools, and that is what planned parenthood is all about. Only feeling the heat will force the judges to see the light.

The law's reasonable

Of course it is. The problem is that the judge that Planned Parenthood spends months shopping around for might not be.

In 2006, 30,117 respondents in 48 states showed that as many as 59% of US citizens believe that abortion ends a human life.

And, of the remaining 41%, the vast majority also know that abortion ends a human life -- they just don't admit to that knowledge, because it would cramp their "do what feels good, and to He__ with any consequences" liberal lifestyle...

"Not entirely sure about the abstinence only thing."

Here's the thing about abstinence: It works every single time it's used. Granted, not all the kids will use abstinence, but if you set the goal high, even if they miss, it's closer to what is best. Aim for the moon. That way, if you miss, you will still at least hit the barn.

I think that, contrary to most leftist educrats, kids respond amazingly to high expectations. They just need to be given the chance to shine. If we don't expect much from them, we will get even less.
