Border Security and Iraq
Do the Dhue | 7/10/7 | Do the Dhue

Border Security and the War On Terror (WOT) has some folks upset. I too am upset about our lack of attention to the border. I have asked, if the President is serious about the WOT, then why don't he secure the border? Some folks gave me an answer I could live with. The best defense is a good offense. We are killing folks who hate us and who would join Al Qeada in Iraq.

I accept that we are killing Al Qeada in Iraq. That is a dang good thing that I don't want to stop doing any time soon. But I just read a story about how Al Qeada may have a cell in the US or one on the way.

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1863848/posts

Well, if this is true, then we need to play some defense and protect our border. The same amount of passion that I have to support the war is the same amount of passion I have for protecting my border. I promised when we started this war that I would not waver, tire, falter, or fail. Peace and freedom will prevail. I am not going to abandon the President on the war. I will not cut and run. Tough times don't last tough people do.

I will not abandon my position on the border too. I want it secured. North and South. Are they done yet? Are current immigration laws enforced yet? Why not? Git r done in the name of National Security. And in the name of National Security, I say we support the mission to the end.

And I want to ask why Congress thinks they can make law that would effect the way a war is executed? My understanding of the Constitution is that Congress votes and funds wars, they do not execute them. The President listens to his Generals and then makes a decision on how it is executed. I think Congress should be standing behind the Generals and the Commander and Chief while we are at war. It is extremely important for all of us to show resolve to our enemy and our friends.

I would like to have my boot so far up Karl Levin's keyster that he could tie the laces with his tongue. I think we should impeach this Congress. Heck, the Iraqi Congress gets more done by 9:AM then this Congress will get done in their entire term.

So that is the pickle. Some of us are still made about the border and rightly so. We have all the reason to be. But I do not think cutting of our nose to spite our face is a good idear. I stand with the war and I want my border secured now.

Securing the border is one thing.

Adopting Isolationist philosophies that allow the threat to gather at our doorstep until inevitably it breaks down the walls we build is something completely different.

Think about it like this in the 1940’s there were millions of Japanese and Nazis that wanted us dead and we did not have borders then in fact our sea ports were open to the immigration invasion that was taking part in this country as millions fled Europe. Anyway what looks logical may not always be the right way forward....

As for the problem of Illegal Immigration itself no Democrat in Congress or positioning themselves for the WH is going to fix it like you or I want it fixed either.

America is on the Offensive in the GWOT hence the removal of Saddam Hussein which was one strategic part of this plan. The Democrats offer nothing but criticism and failure.

I think it is a different kind of threat.

Al Qeada has a goal to detonate seven (it was ten at one time) nukes in seven different cities.

I was a Combat Engineer in the US Army. We built battlefields. I know the importance of a good defensive stance. I am not asking to stop trade with anyone, I want to build a defense along the border.

I want our Government to enforce the current immigration laws so the people will trust them to fund and enforce the next set of immigration laws. Right now, I think they would just give amnesty and my border would remain unsecured.

But you sound like a broken record. Why is it that you are not following what they are doing so you sound intelligent? Secure the border is not a Mary Poppins snap your fingers magic act. It is complicated and time consuming.

Are you sure?

We already have legislation that says we can build 854 miles from California to Texas.

Duncan Hunter says that they are building it at a snails place. He says that there is trouble with funding it.

If we have a serious threat out there, then why are going at a snails pace?

Bush and Chertoff have no intention of securing the borders. That was obvious years ago. When the fence bill passed, I stated that same day that it would never be built. I got flamed, but I was right.

I agree that so far you are right, but I want pressure to have it built.

The pressure point is the President. He has all the authority to build it. Legislation is already behind him. All he has to do is tell Chertoff to start spending the billion that they have sitting and not being used in Homeland Security's budget. That would be a start anyhow.

I spent time and money doing my little part to defeat the amnesty bill. By the grace of God, we all stopped it.

Bush and Chertoff did everything humanly possible to make sure it passed. By all means, put pressure on the President, but he is for open borders and has proved it for 6 years.

Its not what Bush wanted and he is too lame a duck to really make it a reality for Congress... Like I said before unless we get a Conservative that pushes border security as a campaign promise then it won’t get done and if as I fear this wedge has already driven the GOP apart then in 09 we are likely going to see Hillary as the POTUS and believe me she definately isn’t going to fix immigration the way you and I want it fixed thats for sure.

Well, that is just it. I am not going to let it wedge me. That is what this thread is about. I support the war and the border. So, the President opposes my position with the border. That doesn't mean I throw a tantrum and run a mess a demorats into the House, Senate, AND the White House. And I won't let the demorats abandon my Troops in theater.

Hunter says he will have it built in six months.

The law to build a fence is already on the books. Duncan Hunter wrote it. Seems that all we have to do is build it. Congress makes law, the President executes them. It is up to the President to get it built. But like others have pointed out and the President has made loud and clear, he aint up to fence buildin.

Everything goes at a snails pace, these days. Haven't you noticed? There is no urgency that keeps the lawyers from tying everything up in court arguing about environmental impact studies and animal migration patterns. The WTC is still a hole in the ground and Gitmo detainess await trial while the lawyers file endless suits about everything they can dream up. Then there are disputes with Mexico over where the border is.

This is all going on over every mile in an atmosphere that is corrupt and hostile to the fence. If the people who live along the border had wanted a fence, they would have built one, themselves. Where they don't, they just gum up the works and have many activists to help them do it.

I know what Hunter says. However, I don’t put much stock in what pols say. I haven’t seen any evidence that Hunter has any experience managing big projects of any kind. That is his biggest draw back as a candidate.
