Fred Thompson just got some encouraging news. Dr. Richard Land, president of the Southern Baptist Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission tells The Brody File the following:
"My assessment is that at this moment in time it is Fred Thompson's race to lose. It may be a convergence of the right man, in the right place and at the right time. I have never seen anything like this grassroots swell for Thompson. I'm not speaking for Southern Baptists but I do believe I have my hand on the pulse of Southern Baptists and I think I know where the consensus is."
Strong words. Dr. Land doesn't endorse candidates but he is a powerful figure in Evangelical circles. His words matter. So why the fascination with Thompson? Land told me there are a lot of factors. He believes electability is extremely important and thinks that Thompson may be the best social conservative candidate right now to beat Hillary Clinton.
He says just look at the head to head polling between the two of them. But there's more. You know, it was Land that came up with the term, "Southern-Fried Reagan" when describing Thompson. So now he tells me the following:
"He has an ability to connect with people. He comes from small town America where he can appeal to NASCAR dads, Security moms, and Reagan Democrats."
The Brody File is always trying to give it to you straight so let me do so here. Dr. Land is not the only Evangelical leader to feel this way. Others that I have talked to haven't gone on record but they like what they see from Thompson.
This has got to be a major concern for Mitt Romney not to mention frustrating. Here is Romney working hard on the campaign trail for months and securing key conservatives along the way. He's put out policy initiatives, talked about the culture war, etc. Thompson skips along singing a happy tune because he's not officially in yet.
Romney needs some of those Evangelical heavyweights. Having them in his hip pocket is crucial. It would give him cover on the Mormon issue. It's a long race but I'm hearing that you can expect some of these national leaders to come out by the fall with who they like. Time is of the essence.
'It's Fred Thompson's Race to Lose'I've been saying that for weeks.
not only land’s assessment,
but wrap your brain around this:
one of my tv-moron, union neighbors says that she
will not vote for hillary,
but she will vote for fred.
(she crossed over for reagan)
Fred’s appeal is universal, amazing. You can’t fake it, just watch Hillary being ‘southern and black’. Reagan had it, that magic...and so does Fred. God put him in the right place at the right time. There will be a very clear choice for voters in ‘08.
This Evangelical Christian says that what Richard Lamb doesn’t know could fill an encylopedia.
Disagree,
So far Thompson is basically a blank slate, he’s the R’s Obama.... he’s made a few speaches, said some nice rhetoric but not presented anything of substance.
I don’t dislike Fred, but claims like this at this point are poorly thought out.
‘Southern Fried Reagan’ is pretty catchy...
Yo, an FDT Democrat. I’ve met a few of them myself already out here on the moonbat-infested Left Coast.
FDT has that “je ne sais quo” quality...also, he’s not Hillary Clinton.
That’s why the DNC is quaking over Thompson: he’s peeling off their Reagan Democrats.
Some guy on FOX this morning had Romney as the first VP choice. ( of course, McCain or Rudy wouldn’t accept that position)
Well this Baptist is supporting Duncan Hunter sir.
The only way Romney gets heavy endorsements from Christian leaders is if Thompson stumbles, so by default they land on him to attempt to avoid a Rudy coronation.
Otherwise, they are NOT going to endorse a Governor from MASS that changed his tune on a number of issues when he decided to run for President. Not as long as they feel they have an electable proven social conservative, and they feel that way about Thompson.
That Richard Land is in any way affiliated with Rick Warren torpedoes my faith in his opinion.
And I disagree with you. Strongly.
To compare a completely vacuous human being like B. Hussein Obama to Fred is very misguided and very wrong. I know you’re referring to star power, but Milton Friedman had star power and now Paris Hilton does. That does not make them intellectual equals.
Obama is a blank. A zero. An emptiness. Engaging in duckspeak. Like straight out of 1984. Mind completely disengaged. Completely out of the loop. Just mouth yap-yap-yapping away and the google-eyed crowd lapping up his emptiness like a pack of mad dogs drinking at a mirage of non-water in the middle of the desert.
And then there’s Fred.
And if you can’t see the huge difference, I’m sorry for you.
Speaking of the left, not only were they behind that story on abortion but guess what’s starting to circulate with the Andrew Sullivan crowd? Seems they are trying to hint Jeri is a trophy wife in more then one way. They have truly jumped over a cliff.
I like Duncan Hunter. A lot. I think he’s great. But he’s going nowhere. Not in this election. In a Fred administration, yes. Someone here suggested Secretary of Defense. Good suggestion.
Meanwhile, the actual Republican Primary is Fred’s to lose.
I’ve heard that cute GOP governor from Alaska thrown around as Fred’s veep too.
You are missing my point.
My comparison to Obama with Fred is the reaction to them both.
Dems are projecting onto Obama whatever they want because he hasn’t done anything and is making sure to say what they want to hear, with little to no real record to back it up and little outlining of where he stands. He’s a blank slate that those who hate Hillary can project onto whatever they wish.
Fred is much the same way. His governmental record is largely unimpressive and forgetful, and he’s offering nothing but rhetoric in his public events today to rally the faithful. He hasn’t presented any platform, or anything. So those who don’t like Rudy or McCain or Romney just project onto him whatever they want.
He and Obama are both the blank slates that people are projecting onto them whatever they want.
I don’t dislike Fred, but to make statements like “its his to lose” at this point are just grossly foolish IMHO.
