...This week, Freds non-campaign made a seamless transition from smooth to bumpy, and his team has looked decidedly not-ready-for-primetime. The story about who he represented as a lawyer and lobbyist resonates. The dodge that lawyers/lobbyists dont need to share the views of their clients and shouldnt be held responsible for them is a pile of hooey. Each lawyer, like every other member of society, is the conservator of his own talent. If a lawyer chooses to use his talents to try to spring Khalid Sheikh Muhammad, perhaps other lawyers will salute him and see nothing wrong with the effort. But I know and you know that said lawyer wouldnt have much of a political career in front of him.
If I were a general contractor and profited from building a Planned Parenthood facility, I dont imagine that fact would endear me to Americas conservative community. If I sought office as a conservative Republican, I would expect my primary opponent to make an issue of it. Lawyers want to play by a different set of rules, and in the eyes of their fellow members of the Bar, they do. But the rest of the country wont buy it, nor should they.

Let the man enter the race on his own terms.
It’s clear he is working toward that goal.
I believe after his A&E film about Grant airs he will be free to enter the race, but Fred knows his obligations better than I do
I’m curious about the exclamation point thing, I don’t understand its use in this way: ‘Hillary!,’ ‘Fred!,’ etc.
To me this article is an example of the tortured litmus test being applied to candidates. The idea that a builder who erected a building for an eventual use we disaprove of should have their political career ruined. Sorry, I’m not getting on that pretzel train ride.
Seems to me that anyone who can lead the field in South Carolina without even entering the race is doing something right. I also liked his statement on lawyers and clients; I thought he put away that (insincere) objection like an easy lob.
“Since no news out of the Romney camp lately, here’s some news from Fred’s non-campaign to chew on! Enjoy!”
There is plenty of news out of the Romney camp. He is still scuking wind, blowing tons of cash, and is in a solid third place.
“First off, Im sorry for being absent from the festivities the past 48 hours. I was working on three (count em three!) rather large projects that all wrapped up today. Besides, today is the last day of my 30s, and Ive been trying to figure out if the McCain campaign would finally euthanize itself tomorrow as a 40th birthday present for me. If my beloved dog Stinky were limping around in such hopeless agony well, Id do what I had to do.”
This guys one of the biggest friggin whiners I’ve ever tolerated. Only 7 lines and I want to know where’s my barf alert.
Go Fred go....!
“Its time he enters the ring and proves that he can play on this level. Its only fair that he allows Republican Party members to make an informed decision about the man who seeks to lead them.”
Duh.
Play on this level?
What level is that? The Obama girl, Tavis Smiley,Gay Debates level?
Fred is smart in sitting this round out
I thought this part was unfair. Why is Fred responsible for the millions of "dorko-fanboys"? No offense, fellow FreePers. Those were Dean's words, not mine... :^)
Fred is handling this just exactly right. Just because other candidates on both sides jumped the gun (because their just-out-of-college marketing people told them to “maximize their fund-raising window” by declaring insanely early) doesn’t mean that’s good strategy. Fred will announce when he and his (apparently very savvy) experienced marketing people think he can have momentum without the electorate growing tired of him. He’s playing this masterfully.
I’m voting for Colin Powell. He can beat Hillary!
Bingo
I really don’t think you want him to run, you want Fred to never run. Your concern does not seem sincere.
He’s making progress, doing all the right things to run, he will get there when he needs to. He wouldn’t be doing the speeches and columns and appearances and fundraising and renting a campaign headquarters if he weren’t going to run. He is obeying the law [the testing the waters law].
He’s smart, and I’m impressed. It might lead in future years to people not declaring so early. We don’t need a two year national campaign. He doesn’t need to do anything to impress you, you wouldn’t support him anyway.
Fred, the train is leaving the station. If he holdd out much longer, people won’t care anymore. His campaign would be like a balloon when you let all the air out of it.
You couldn’t be more wrong. See my #12.
Yeah. Thats why he is leading the polls and hasnt spent a dime as he watches the others implode /sarc
McCains gone. Mitt is looking weaker, Julieannie is not faring well
I agree. The primary campaign process is supposed to toughen a candidate, so he will be ready for the general election against the Democrats.
I worry about sending up a GOP candidate against the Hill/Obama machine that hasn’t been “road-tested” yet.
Yeah. Real intellectual giants there.
You might be more at home at DU.
