Police still searching for stadium tree vandals (killing a Tree to save a forest alert!)

BERKELEY-- Here's a bit of irony: The tree sitters who have been living in a grove of historic oaks they want to save are being accused of lopping off the top of a redwood and a cedar to make room for at least one sleeping platform.

"They have not been cited because we don't know who the responsible (person) is ... it's still under investigation," said Mitch Celaya, UC Berkeley's assistant police chief. "The trees are permanently damaged. It's not like the top of the tree is going to grow back."

Since early December, a small group of people have been living in trees near Memorial Stadium to protest a plan to raze dozens of historic oaks to make way for a $125 million sports training center.

UC Berkeley has offered to plant three new trees for every one removed.

Though the tree sitters have long had their necessities -- sleeping pads, bathroom buckets, books, musical instruments and food in the trees -- police say they believe the sitters lopped off the trees to give themselves more room.

Typical liberal.

It’s like Cindy Sheehan’s “fast” where she probably ate more calories than I do in a single day.

They hate to be uncomforatble but love to make everyone else so.

Question: How do you get a one-armed tree sitter out of a tree?

Answer: Give him the finger.

Hmmmmm! I've cut the tops off of dozens of trees, and they've managed to regrow quite nicely. But maybe I don't know as much about trees as the Berkeley police.

Couldn’t they just put a beehive up there with them?

It is a matter of semantics and being precise in the terms. If you cut "the top off" of a tree, the tree does not die. Nor does the "top" grow back. Instead a new branch will grow and direct itself up, thus creating a "new top".

But all that aside, it still strikes me and probably others as asinine to protest the destruction of the trees by causing damage to them.

We don’t have many redwoods in the Midwest, but cutting the top out of a cedar will permanently deform it.
