Charity begins at home in piece of hack heaven
By Howie Carr

Boston Herald Columnist
Friday, July 13, 2007

The state hacks still don’t have their August holiday, but this latest scam is even better - 12 new “volunteer” days, when they don’t have to come in but they still get paid.

What a great idea from Gov. Deval Patrick - and how much do you want to bet that most of the volunteering will be done on Fridays and Mondays?

I’ve got an idea: Why don’t state employees volunteer to come in to work on Bunker Hill Day and Evacuation Day?

Here was the take from the local moonbat gazette on what a wonderful idea Deval has come up with:

“Volunteering is also a visceral education for state workers that moves them out of the office and into some of the lives and places that state government is supposed to help.”

Right before Christmas, I’m guessing a lot of those places the volunteers will be visiting will be malls.

In the winter, the volunteers’ visceral education will likely involve ski slopes. And this time of year - well, I can already see some of those 20 or so new assistant court clerks that were added in the new state budget this week “volunteering” their time to “instruct” the youth of Massachusetts on a municipal golf course. Fore!

Teaching sailing - another commendable summer volunteer effort. Protecting piping plovers on the Cape, patrolling wet T-shirt nights to make sure no underage women are being exploited. The possibilities are endless. And of course there will be no fraud or abuse in this wonderful plan to encourage “volunteers.”

Another thing: Will the “volunteering” state workers be replaced by other state workers, at time and a half? Or are the only workers allowed to volunteer the so-called nonessentials - the hacks who are always told to stay home every time there’s a light dusting of snow.

I got a call last night from a guy in the Dreaded Private Sector.

“Where do I get one of these state jobs where you get paid to volunteer?” he asked. “I was a Boy Scout leader for eight years. I didn’t get paid. Actually, I had to pay money out of my own pocket.”

Sorry, pal, even if you got a job on the state, you’d be bleep out of luck. The Boy Scouts believe in God. As another caller noted, “The policy specifically excludes an action that might coincide with a religious belief.”

A legislative committee once compared the number of sick days in the public and the Dreaded Private Sectors - 15 for the former, and 5 for the latter. I guess you could say that those in the public sector “volunteer” not to come in at a rate three times higher than the rest of us.

Of course, once you start banging in sick that many days in the real world, you’re not going to be around very long. That is usually not a problem “on the state.”

“You go out for six months,” an ex-state worker named Ellie explained, “and you don’t have to be replaced because nobody knows what you do.”
Speaking of which, the governor has an exceptionally busy schedule today. He’s in Berkshire County, of course, because it’s Friday, and last night he hosted a $150-a-head time at his mansion in Richmond.

Volunteers, er, state workers were encouraged to . . . volunteer.

So this morning Deval is in Pittsfield speaking at a “round-table discussion about tourism in Berkshire County.”

Fascinating stuff, no doubt. And then it’s off to Dalton for a 10:30 a.m. tour of the Crane Paper Factory. And after that, well, I guess you can call it a volunteer day.

Very, very good, it’s actually the paper. And there ARE machine guns in MA. I opined to Howie that I would spend my 12 days off..I mean “volunteering” helping The Human Fund.

who knows—I do notice in today’s Herald it was said that WRKO didn’t want to shift Howie to mornings—i.e., they matched
WTKK’s offer but since one of Howie’s demands is to do
morning drive, it looks like Howie is moving. (Also he
wants to be on FM...and maybe a “change of place”
is called for)

Here’s Howie’s complaint.

http://www.bostonherald.com/multimedia/20070710/complaint.pdf

Howard L. Carr v. Entercom Boston

“Howard L. Carr seeks immediate...relief to prevent
his current employer from utilizing illegal and unenforceable
contract provisions to restrain his legal right to pursue a new employment opportunity in the radio broadcasting industry.”

Among other things the lawsuit charges that Entercom
did not extend HC’s contract as he agreed to do so,
and that he’s being prevented an opportunity to
work at a station that, he feels, would have a far
greater listening audience.

WVMT's been "down" most of the week. Not only no Howie, er, fill-ins, but they royally messed up the broadcast day for most of the week.

I forgot to write down what generic feed they were using. But, Ingraham was on Monday during drive time, followed by the local morning show repeat, then BOR was on a couple of days during drive time.

I heard Miller in the late AM again, finally, today, and Doyle's back on again for drive time. (He replaced Howie during that Empress/Coffee Boy syndication snafu.)

This has got to be the last show. Before the chumpline he made a quite a deal about the website being down (paraphrasing) “If you are trying to send me a message I am sitting right here, go ahead! I’ve been waiting for days!”

Then a moment later: “The board is lighting up with calls about the website, (joking) I thought I made it clear yesterday I will not discuss my personal business, don’t make me read that statement again. Well at least I won’t have to print it out it’s in the papers!”

Then during one the chump line messages “I thought the elephant in the room clip was pretty self-explanatory but it looks like the elephant is storming it’s way back in the room today.”

I guess since his current contract doesn’t expire until mid September, he has to show up and not disparage the current employer. He’s just having fun with them. Of course, since they have no talent left at the station, they don’t want to have to tell him to take a hike at this point. How long will they put up with the little innuendos? Who knows, but at least it’s entertaining and people are listening.

Still on the ‘RKO website. Says, “Have a great weekend, Howie will be back on Monday.”

Link to the Howie Carr on WRKO ( http://wrko.com/pages/681308.php) works fine. Does WRKO “own” howiecarr.com? Just a skin’?
