Sex, lies and a stealthy film crew: Not your average city convention
Minneapolis Star Tribune ^ | July 14, 2007 | Allie Shah

The week started out innocently enough. Abstinence advocates gathered in St. Paul for their big annual conference. Hundreds milled about the Crowne Plaza St. Paul-Riverfront Hotel downtown, listening to Miss Black America and other guests share their personal stories and convictions.

In the exhibit hall, scores of vendors hawked goods promoting the abstinence message, including underwear with stop signs on them.

Things took a volatile turn on Tuesday, however, when organizers had a run-in with a documentary film crew and called the cops.

The two-person crew reportedly wore fake press badges, refused to identify themselves or their project, and ultimately ran to a car with organizers in pursuit.

Trixie Films in New York confirmed that it had hired a crew to record footage but said little more.

"They asked us not to shoot, and we said 'OK,' and we left," said Therese Shechter, of Trixie Films.

In an age of Michael Moore ("Sicko"), Sacha Baron Cohen ("Borat") and YouTube, documentaries have gained considerable exposure, heightening awareness and sensitivities about the medium. A half-dozen lawsuits were filed against Twentieth Century Fox by people upset about how they appeared in "Borat," a blockbuster mock documentary. This week's showdown at the abstinence conference reflects a distrust of camera crews and a fear many have of being portrayed in a way that could haunt them later.

"We keep talking about the brave new world where everybody's a journalist -- well, it's here," said Ken Stone, an award-winning documentary filmmaker who is on the faculty at the University of Minnesota's journalism school.

Anybody with a cell phone, a digital camera and the Internet can be a moviemaker. And more of the general public is wary of how they could be portrayed for the masses, said Clay Steinman, professor of humanities and media and cultural studies

"The power did go to the people, and nobody knows what the rules are," Stone [U of Minn professor] said.

Yep, nobody knows what the rules are. That must have been why these folks used fake press passes.

Trixie Films, an independent media company, wouldn't say how the footage would be used. The company's website lists a documentary in the works called, "The American Virgin." Trailers of the film are on the website and show interviews with former U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Joycelyn Elders, the editor of CosmoGirl and others discussing the definition of a virgin.

The left despises all virtue, and they work to destroy it wherever possible on the orders of their satanic master.

Probably a porn company.

Does anyone remember during the political conventions (Clinton/Dole, I think), someone had access to the Republican and Dem convention floors. They put a hidden camera in a flashy lady’s cleavage and then taped the men who looked right into the . . . camera.

The Republican men, showing great present of mind and self control (and maybe sensing a trap) did not look. The Clinton democrats got caught blatantly staring at the ladies bosom, LOL.

Is that video still available? “B**b cam”?

There is a subtle undermessage often implied in these “filmings” — Democrats are sexually aware (and hip), Republicans are sexually repressed.

But then there is the Fred/trophy wife “controversy.” So when a Republican has a pretty younger wife (and kids) he is not “hip” — just a dirty old man (if you ask Susan Estrich).

There is also a lot of insecurity in those who go to these lengths. I would take all this as a sign of our side gaining ground.

"Portrayed"? The camera doesn't lie.

Wasn't it great when you could behave like an ass and there was never a price to it...

Cameras, like guns, have a civilizing effect. That is only a good thing.

So you believe Michael Moore's “documentaries” are truthful?

Cameras don’t lie?

The BBC just apologized for its report (filmed by camera) that reversed a sequence of events and made the queen look as is she had done something that she did not. Same thing with a second BBC “expose’” of PM Brown. Just two recent examples. No offense friend, but cameras can be an instrument of falsehood. Civilizing? Sure, but not exclusively or mandatorily so.

I’ve looked on YouTube. Whoever filmed it had to be pretty upstanding to get on the floor of both conventions. Maybe that lady who does the funny spots on CNN? I just can’t find it. I would love to post it, LOL.

LOL, Donna, I was teasing you, and did not mean to put you to the trouble. But to make amends, I went to g(oogle) and put in appropriate search words. No luck. That will not stop me from g(oogling).

"Portrayed"? The camera doesn't lie.

But Photoshop and selective editing do. Ask Lumpy Riefenstahl (aka Michael Moore).

If nobody knows what the rules are, I volunteer my services to decide them. It won’t be pretty.
