"But while TEPCO had initially said that the lethal earthquake had not caused any leaks, it revealed later on Monday night that 1,200 liters of radioactive water had sloshed into the sea from its Kashiwazaki-Kariwa plant in Niigata." ... "Also on Tuesday, the company admitted that a small amount of radioactive materials -- cobalt-60, iodine and chromium-51 -- had been emitted into the atmosphere."

The situation in Japan is much worse than has been previously reported. Thousands are homeless and reports indicate that shelters are full with some people sleeping in the streets.

TEPCO officials have been slow to release information regarding the true damage to the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear power plant.

Current reports indicate 9 fatalities, 800 homes destroyed in Nigata alone and 9,000 homeless.

Three nuclear power plants are offline with no restart time announced.

Place your wallet on a kitchen scale and wait for it to get lighter. Shouldn’t take long.

How the hell does radioactive water “slosh” into the sea? Do they have huge, uncovered pools of radioactive water just sitting there? Sounds like a great target for terrorists...

“Tokyo Electric Power Co. said a total of 50 cases of malfunctioning and trouble had been found at the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear plant since Monday’s magnitude 6.6 quake, which killed at least nine people and left 13,000 homeless.
...
The company said they were still inspecting the plant, which shut down automatically after the quake, and further problems could emerge.”

“a TEPCO official told a news conference that checks of 22,000 drums containing nuclear waste at a warehouse had found about 100 had fallen over and “several” lost their lids.

Only about half the drums had been inspected so far, and it was not immediately clear from the official’s comments whether there was any impact on the environment or people.”

this might turn out to be really bad.....only half of 22,000 have been checked......

Naah, if they were doing that, they’d be testing them in NK.

The plant is a GE-designed ‘boiler’. The primary containment srructures are within a secondary containment that looks like a normal building from the outside - not the iconic dome-shaped strructure that you would associate with a pressurized water design such as a Westinghouse unit.

Maybe that’s why they’re using the word ‘slosh’.
