America's Coldest Candidates
Forbes ^ | 07.17.07 | David A. Andelman

Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., is the coldest presidential candidate among both Democrats and Republicans, and by a wide margin, according to the July edition of the Forbes '08 Tracker poll. By contrast, her fellow Democrats, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., and New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson are the least cold.

Some 28% of voting-aged Americans polled in the latest survey associated "coldness" as an attribute that described Clinton, while just 4% associated this trait with Obama or Richardson.

Neither Forbes.com nor E-Poll, the California market research company that is conducting the polling, defines any of the 46 attributes on which it polls its sample population--the same traits it has used to select high-level spokespeople for advertising campaigns for more than a decade.

In Pictures: Coldest Candidates Politics, along with selling cars, television shows or any other product, has become a complex marketing process. The 46 attributes help define trends and key drivers of what moves a person to respond or react to the messaging and the messenger. In this case, the candidate's name is given to the polled population, which is then asked to match whichever of the attributes it believes is appropriate for the candidate in question.

Coldness is probably not an attribute that is as profoundly important as a positive or negative trait in a president during the performance of his or her duties. Some of those who have held the office have been decidedly unapproachable. However, with today's intense media scrutiny and the need for many voters to connect with the individual they may select as their president, the perceived warmth of a candidate could play an important role in a victory. Once, it was how many babies a candidate could kiss. Now, it's more often a broader issue of congeniality.

Still, many other issues could impact the views of those who participated in the poll. Clinton, for instance, is the only woman in the race and many voters may still be in the process of evaluating how to perceive a woman as a candidate.

At the same time, a candidate like Fred Thompson, who's ranked No. 1 in overall appeal, comes in with a relatively slim 6% coldness score. This low coldness rating may have something to do with the five years he spent playing the grandfatherly Manhattan district attorney on NBC's Law and Order.

In most cases, low coldness scores correlate with high overall appeal numbers. The top Democrat for overall appeal, Barack Obama, clocks in with just a 4% coldness rating, just one point behind Rudy Giuliani, who is the second-ranked Republican after Fred Thompson in overall appeal.

At the same time, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, who comes in as the second coldest Republican (after former House Speaker Newt Gingrich) with a 12% coldness number, has also slid to the second from the bottom in total appeal with just 23% of those polled finding him appealing. Gingrich, the coldest Republican, is also the least appealing candidate of either party.

As a relatively young person, I have to admit I've never seen "Law and Order." Media and poll speculation is way off base on this one. FT, although somewhat folksy, is more of a statesman, carries himself well and seems well versed in today's everchanging world.

I personally think this is an important factor. It seems that since the advent of televised presidential campigns the winner is usually the one with the greater charisma or “likeability”, at least in the final general election. I believe there is a large swath of people who really don’t care about politics like we do who end up voting for the candidate they “like” the best. And I’m not necessarily putting that down, just pointing it out.

Hitlery is evil to her core and it shows. She’s all about her acquiring power at any cost and that cost will be our nation’s security; she will destroy our military and destroy our children and grand children’s future not to mention sucking up to every enemy we have.

Good God almighty. If you have to have a process to evaluate how to perceive something, you do not deserve to vote.

Hillary and Mitt are consistently ranked the two most disliked presidential candidates.

Who but a liberal would say something like "I'm in the process of evaluating how to perceive a candidate."

That sounds almost like post-modernist mumbo-jumbo.

look how stiff she is. She is not relaxed. Know why? She’s a phony baloney that’s why. She can’t even looked relaxed in a photo with her own family. She has to PRETEND to smile and look relaxed which CLEARLY she is NOT.

I was trying to recall any photos of Hilary showing affection and warmth with Chelsea. I couldn’t think of any instances where I remember seeing her as a ‘mommy’. Maybe there are some, but this photo seems to be a more standard image for the Hilster.
