Supposedly, one of the reasons we held back in VN was because the Soviets threatened to launch if we went at the war too hard.
After Linebacker II Giap admitted he was ready to quit. Imagine if we had called the Soviets on their bluff (?) in the early 60's, and leveled Hanoi and Haiphong mercilessly. What if Reagan had been President at that time? Would he have called the Soviets out? I guess we'll never now.

The U.S. won the Vietnam War on the ground but lost the propaganda war to the “useful idiots” in the media. The same thing is happening now in re Iraq.

that’s how the american left and the soviets dovetailed together.
but many american tv viewers were to dim witted to admit it.

Leasons that are refused to be learned today ,rules of engagement that prevent killing the enemy or border agents who aren’t allow to respond with force against invasion. The sad thing is both on the border or the battle field those men on the front lines who respond with common sense are sent to prison while the enemy is paid ,feted and allowed to spin a tale to the media. This President Bush is why you don’t have any support from us but listen to those who whisper legacy and compassion those people were always were ready to destroy you every time you embraced them,ah s___t trying to tell this to the White House is just pi_____g in the wind!

Abandoning South Vietnam to slaughter and slavery was one of the darkpoints in our history. Funny thing is that the dems and the left want to relive it in Iraq.

...And the Vietnam War though it would continue for a few more years was for all intent and purposes, lost...wrong - as Michael Barone stated recently on C-Span, the book "A Better War" details how when General Abrams took over from Westmoreland and initiated the tactic of clearing and holding areas contested by the enemy (apparently similar to the tactic we are finally applying in Iraq), our progress in the war became dramatic to the point that the South probably could have held out against the North - until Democrat senators refused to provide the funding and equipment which had been promised - the war was thrown away, not lost, by the 'rats......

Americans neither understood nor appreciated our actual battlefield successes in TETCould that be because all they were fed were how we lost it and were losers?

Following Korea came Vietnam where liberal Democratic politics forced us to accept a defeat we never suffered on the battlefield. Now we have Iraq and a War on Terror where once again liberal Democrats are trying to force another defeat down the throat of America. They have the same cohorts with the Mainstream Media and elite East Cost newspapers and their allies now are not the Communists of North Vietnam and the Soviet Union, but instead the very Islamic terrorists that flatten the World Trade Center and beheaded our POWs.
-snip-
I was born before the Korean War and lived through the disgrace of Vietnam. The first Gulf War seemed to erase the defeat legacy our military suffered in Vietnam, but once more, the Whores & Hounds of Hell are nipping at our heels lead by the Clintons, Pelosi, Ried, Obama, Edwards, Kerry, Ted Kennedy and the other lice ridden vermin that call themselves Democrats.

What if Reagan had been President at that time? It would have been enough to have elected Reagan's choice for President, Barry Goldwater. Goldwater advocated taking the fight to North Vietnam during the 1964 election campaign.
Lyndon Johnson and his comrades in the national press portrayed Goldwater as a madman who would get us into a major war. All while LBJ himself was privately planning on sending American combat troops to South Vietnam to do the heavy fighting.

Part of the reason is because the fighting in Vietnam was hard for the public to follow. We were fighting a defensive action leaving the North as a sanctuary.
America wins wars on the offensive, conquering and overrunning enemy territory. We haven’t had as much success in defending against drawn out insurgencies. Neither Johnson nor Nixon were willing to invade the North and capture Hanoi.

I’ve got a lapel pin that shows a GI in front of a map of Vietnam and says “We Were Winning When I Left”. True. US military never lost a battle; war was not lost but abandoned in Washington DC. Sad to see same thing happening to our troops today.
