Dobbs: Time to Free Ramos and Compean
CNN ^ | July 18, '07 | Lou Dobbs

Posted on 07/20/2007 8:10:11 PM PDT by T.L.Sink

There was an unusual spectacle in the nation's capital Tuesday, downright rare, in fact. U.S. Senators seeking truth, and justice, and taking action. The Senate Judiciary Committee hearing focused on the reasons for the prosecution of two Border Patrol agents now serving long sentences in federal prison. Agents Ramos and Compean were given 11 and 12 years respectively on their convictions for shooting an illegal alien drug smuggler. U.S. Attorney Johnny Sutton chose to prosecute Ramos and Campean and give that illegal alien drug smuggler blanket immunity to teastify against them. Sutton's decision to file attempted murder charges against them and seek harsh mandatory prison sentences was simply an outrage. Senators took Sutton to task for what they clearly now see as a blatant abuse of prosecutorial power and strongly questioned the decision to give immunity to a known illegal alien drug smuggler. [who continued to bring in drugs during his immunity status] The agents were serving their nation in a war zone. Mexico is the principal source of heroin, cocaine, marijuana and methamphetamines into this country. Our border with Mexico is the main battlefield in the war against drugs. Border Patrol Chief David Aguilar testified that from February 1, 2005 to June 30, 2007, there were 1982 assaults against Border Patrol agents. These include rock throwing, physical assaults, vehicular assaults and shootings. T.J. Bonner of the National Border Patrol Council said the Border Patrol is suffering as a result.

The unanswered question now being investigated is why Johnny Sutton and the judge - both Texas buddies appointed by Bush - withheld crucial evidence from the jury. AND, was there a quid pro quo with the Mexican government concerning the enforcement of laws against the illegal alien invaders. Did Bush want to send a signal?

Lou Dobbs is a genuine hero.

Everything touched by Bush shall have become poison before this is through.

How does Dobbs stay on CNN?
I’m surprised he hasn't been banned by now.

Ratings. Big ratings.

And it's because he has by far the best show on that station.

had 9.11 not occurred,

u.s.—mexico relations would have been vastly different:

el president vicente fox was getting ready to fly to washington d.c. to meet with el presidente bush

to give mexican nationals legal standing in the u.s.

Just wish that while Vice President Cheney is acting President tomorrow he would pardon Ramos and Compean, and follow that up with a pardon for Libby!

Kudos to Dobbs for keeping the pressure on this issue. He’s been at it for awhile.

But Sutton is a buddy of W’s. He’s a swell guy and probably likes to fish off of Kennebunkport and go quail huntin in Texas. Sutton’s got all the important qualifications to be a prosecuting attorney for the Bush bunch.

Bush’s friends ruining the lives of two border agents and demoralizing all border patrol agents is an outrage. And Bush sticks up for Sutton!

Just wish that while Vice President Cheney is acting President tomorrow, he does not do anything spectacular.

One of the things I admire Dobbs for is that he’s not a typical MSM elitist phony. He came from a poor family and actually worked in the fields with common laborers when he was young. He went on to earn a degree in economics from Harvard.
Yes, his ratings are high now but he took on this issue when it was too controversial and too hot for others to risk getting involved.
He also does alot of his own research and doesn’t just recite talking points from a teleprompter.
I think he’s a great American journalist and a great defender of the American middle class and its traditional values.

sutton’s a best bud and operative.

close confidant when w was governor of texas, and

he was involved in the florida republican-democrap

argument that scotus decided.

as hedgecock was saying today, moving from a prestigious and powerful job in wa wa d.c. to el paso would normally be a demotion.

not so here. he was assigned by bush to go to el paso to install the bush-fox policy of legitimizing mexicans in the u.s.

I saw a rerun of the hearing this morning, and I couldn’t believe how Dianne Feinstein seemed to really care about these two agents. She seemed very outraged with the way they’ve been treated. And of course our usual heroes (Duncan Hunter, Dana Rohrbacher, John Cornyn) put forth good arguments, as usual.

Hopefully these two will be released soon, as I believe Congress must act soon after hearing the testimony this week.

Rather than push for a pardon at this stage, it seems to me that they would have a very good case on appeal as this crucial evidence was withheld from the jury. Another trial would most likely result in an acquittal.

I was surprised too. Both she and Cornyn were on Lou Dobbs’ show last week and she really spoke the truth. It may be that in Mexifornia even the libs are finally hearing the voice of their constituents. I think that the public outrage and explosion that caused the defeat of the Bush-Kennedy amnesty bill sent a loud and clear message to all the pandering pols!

It will probably take a ‘08 Presidential victory by whoever the final Republican is before these two border agents are eventually pardoned by either President Bush just before he leaves or by the next Republican President. If the Democrats end up having a very good general election day on November 4, 2008 and Hillary Clinton is the next President, then there’s probably no chance for these two border agents to ever be pardoned.

I think you’re probably right but the families of Ramos and Compean have been totally devasted by this miscarriage of justice. I don’t know if financially or emotionally they could sustain years more of this legal circus. At least a pardon would allow them to try to start putting their lives back together as best they can.

I personally don’t expect any pardon from Bush because Sutton and the judge are his buddies. He’s partly to blame because in six years he’s done nothing to secure our borders - in fact, he’s OPPOSED every effort to do so. God help us if the next to waltz across the Mexican border is not an illegal alien drug smuggler but some terrorists! By the way, Tancredo is taking congressional action to secure a pardon.
