In 2004, Wisconsin Right to Life, a small citizens group that posed no conceivable threat of "corruption" to anyone or anything, wanted to run an ad urging Wisconsin's senators, Herb Kohl and Russ Feingold, not to participate in Senate filibusters against the president's judicial nominations... The WRTL case could have been an occasion for McCain to say: This is not what McCain-Feingold was designed to do -- it was intended to stop the (as he sees it) "corruption" of elected officials soliciting large "soft money" contributions (not for particular candidates, but for party-building and other activities). Or he could at least have kept quiet. Instead, he went out of his way to stick his thumb in the eye of critics: With his brief to the Supreme Court, he underscored the fact that suppressing inconvenient (to politicians) speech is exactly what he and his McCain-Feingold allies -- Fred Thompson was an important one -- had in mind... years before the immigration controversy reached a boil, and before the war even began, McCain-Feingold had generated more, and more intense, opposition to McCain than he or his supporters in the media comprehend. Being exempt from the McCain-Feingold leash, the media like the law's restraints on rival voices.

I disagree with many FReepers about McCain in that I think he's a decent person who served this country. But I wouldn't want him as my President. (Sec Def?)
Not Sec’y of Defense, maybe Ambassador to Pakistan? ;’)
Or even Ambassador to Freedonia?

Just a thought, since you post such excellent threads on archaeological pursuits and such:
It's quite possible that in a few thousand years, archaeologists will stumble across McCain's political career. He buried it long ago with CFR and the Keating scandal. Everything afterwards was a sympathy vote for his years of service to this nation in captivity. His tirades and other antics have pretty much turned off conservatives for good, though.
I have an acquaintance who served under John McCain in the Navy. He was ferociously loyal to John McCain. Still, and this is some 30 years later, he has obvious issues with some of the recent press on McCain in the past few years. Probably would have supported McCain if he hadn't self destructed in 2k. However I don't think he was quite on board this time around.
I don't think that would stop the man from taking a bullet for John McCain if the situation ever rose.
I only learned this about the guy after about 5 years. Always knew he was a naval aviator, just didn't know about the McCain part.
Wow! Cartoon font!
I guess that’s to indicate it’s about John McCain.
Will is really not a very good writer any more. The above sample is practically gibberish. Will is still capable of tossing out impressive sounding words. Unfortunately, he is rarely able to marshal them into elegant, or even intelligible paragraphs.
Will, Won’t.
That’s a nice font — for a child’s birthday card.
I doubt you'll find three (sane)[see not loserdopian] FReepers who would say that McCain is not a decent man or that he did not serve his country.
He meets both qualifications...unfortunately, he is no longer a Conservative...and THAT is why "many FReepers" will not stomach him.
He allowed his own pride & bitterness to set his course. And he is encountering its logical pitfalls.
I hope he repents.
