ROCKVILLE, Md. Charges against a man accused of repeatedly raping and molesting a 7-year-old girl were dismissed last week because the court could not find an interpreter fluent in the suspect's native West African language.
Mahamu Kanneh, a Liberian native who received asylum in this country and attended high school and community college here, according to The Washington Post, was denied a speedy trial after three years awaiting a court-appointed interpreter who could speak the tribal language of Vai.

We are a living and breathing Constitution based sovereign country.
Give him a break. /sarcasm in total

A DC suburb. Southern Md is 10 miles + south of the beltway. I guess if you live in Hagerstown then it is Southern.

For all intents and purposes, Vai is a dead language. For those few who do speak it, it is sedondary to their native tongue, English.
GlobalSecurity.org ~ Liberia Country Study Some Vai, many of whom are Muslims, are literate in three different languages and scripts: Vai, Arabic, and English. The script has been kept alive largely as a matter of pride. It is not taught routinely to Vai children but is transmitted by knowledgeable elders to youngsters who express a desire to learn it.
I doubt that Mahamu Kanneh is even fluent in Vai.

This is beyond outrageous. I’ll bet the creep is paying taxes - the IRS wouldn’t hesitate to through him in jail for that without an interpreter.

Some Vai, many of whom are Muslims... I can't imagine what name "Mahamu" is a variant of, but I'm sure it's a name of peace.

Basically yes... Just imagine how many languages there are in the entire world - it will stagger you.
As America further adopts the destructive ideology of diversity and multiculturalism - they will find that the courts in big cities in the USA will need to have over a hundred translators on hire just to meet the demand.

I'm sure the defense lawyer thought this one up. "When they ask you something, act like you don't understand English".
If the Judge were more creative, the essential communications could have been made nonverbally. Just bring in a mouse and drop it in a cage with a python. On the mouse, write "You". On the python, write "Bubba".

Lets see, the judge drops charges against this child rapist because he can not speak English well enough to maneuver our legal system. For one, native born English language users can not maneuver through our legal system without the assistance of a lawyer to interpret the legal mumbo jumbo passed off as legalese. That being said, this rapist had his charges dropped because he could not speak English and then was interviewed, in English, and had no problem.
This judge, due to her obvious stupidity, ranks right up there with the clueless Canoe Reporter.
